[this morning finds Ray and his Litwick on the outskirts of Castelia City, on Route 4 near the construction sites. Ray's got a brand new utility belt with plenty of pockets, and a few new Pokeballs, and some berries and sprays ...

... and an itch to do what scientists do best: FIELD WORK. he's crouched at the edge of some tall grass, goggles down, watching carefully for any sign of movement, keeping his voice low]

Okay. ... Okay, Litwick. I think I see one. This is cool. This is great, I know just what to do.

Wiiiiiick... [the poor Litwick is still just a starter, and it's not very happy about this, but Ray LOVES HER to pieces, so she can forgive how scary this is and be brave. also, he fed her french toast this morning. best trainer.]

Ready? ... Ready?! .... GET IT!

[and as the Litwick jumps into the tall grass .... A WILD (INSERT YOUR POKEMON HERE) APPEARS! shall we battle, residents?]

[oh! oh crap! Ray didn't realize that he was sending Litwick after someone else's Pokemon, but the little guy looks pumped, so he waves to Percy] Hi!

[the Litwick starts off with a nice, solid Astonish]

[Tentacool gets hit] It's okay, buddy, shake it off. Let's see if we can douse that flame. Use Bubble Beam!

[And here's a shiny Rapidash. Geez, Ray. Way to throw a baby pokemon against a large horse.

She stares at the candle. The heck does she want?]

[Litwick is just so excited. Mostly because her trainer is. She doesn't know any better and figures this is a battle, so she launches right into Astonish! ... Ray, meanwhile, is trying to figure out why this Pokemon looks familiar]

[and she gets hit because well. This was unexpected.

She rears, whinnying angrily and...dances back a few steps. How does one go about discouraging this thing without hurting it? And is that Ray? Hey! What gives, buddy?]

[Don't mind if Newt lets out a little shriek, because really, all this Pokemon jumping out of the tall grass is frightening stuff, okay? ;;]

[Once he recovers (and realizes its a moving candle thing, what the heck) he gestures for his Lunatone to notice the new threat and act accordingly.]

Arthur, um, this is your thing. Go on, battle!

Lunatooooooonnnneeeeeeee. [It slowly floats over. Quickness is not in Arthur's repertoire, nope.]

Oh geez, I'm sorry! I didn't mean to scare you! I was just looking for wild Pokemon with Willow, here...

[...who is unimpressed with the pace here and decides to try to Astonish Arthur into hurrying it up]

Oh, um, no problem! Just startled easily, that's all. But um, thought this was a wild Pokemon, I had no idea it was yours...

[And Newt can't help but watch as Arthur is startled by the Astonish- but the Pokemon doesn't flinch, and immediately retaliates with Confusion at the little candle Pokemon.]

[well! that poor little oddish that your creepy candle thing just jumped was only trying to hide from its owner, hoping its leaves would blend in with the grass. Said owner is now apathetically wandering over when he hears the sound of his surprised creature]

[and, its owner is farther down the path in another patch of grass, completely oblivious to its plight]

Billy? ... [Ray BEAMS and waves] Hey, Billy, over here!

[Willow's about to go for an opening move when she spots those goggles and blinks, confused.]

Lit! Liiiiiitwick, wick? [Whoa! What's with the headgear?]

[the psyduck kicks and flails, trying to roll itself over and back onto its feet, complaining something about its owner being crazy.

Meanwhile, said owner hears a familiar voice and finally spots the others, waving back before wandering towards them]

[ And as Twilight wanders around, she suddenly finds herself facing a candle!

....wait, what? ]

[ But to a human, it just sounds like she's saying "ponyta". Welp. ]

["I'm not strange!" The Litwick almost seems to pout a little. Ray, meanwhile, is fascinated by the appearance of a new Pokemon, and fishes out his Pokedex]

Oh, wow, I haven't seen one of those, yet! [Ray grins, as the Litwick edges closer. what's the matter, little dude, don't wanna battle?]

[Connor rolls his eyes] Oh c'mon, do somethin' wouldja?

[Teddiursa looks over his shoulder at Connor before toddling forward towards the Litwick. Teddidursa uses Slash!]

[Connor looks up at Ray. Wow. So enthusiastic, dude. Though, he supposes it is pretty interesting]

[ Quinn had left the city for a walk, to see if there was anything else and to just... get away. Sitting in the grass and thinking for a bit? Hadn't seemed like a bad idea.

Until the candle came along.

And on top of that? It ended up spooking her Azurill, one that gives a babyish cry and curls into her.

She's not impressed with the candle ]
