Sixteenth Spell

[Hermione has taken her radio down to the music room. Hard Harry suggested they use it to broadcast music. So she is going to do just that. She taps the radio until she gets a good frequency, then begins to play the piano.

It's a simple piece but she still sounds a bit out of practice. Not much chance for music when you're on the run]

That may work...[Hermione can't see this, but she smiles sadly.] They would never be the same, though. They were made out of Linkite Nut, which make a beautiful sound when shaken in the wind. As far as I know, it can only be found in my world.

There are also so many memories attached to those panpipes. [She laughs, remembering some of those memories.] I remember when I used them to call down Aska, the summon spirit of Light and the Sun.

...oh. I see.

I'm afraid I haven't heard of Aska.

Aska is a summon spirit of my world. I would be surprised if you had heard of him, since you're from Earth. He is attracted to the sound of Linkite Nuts, hence my panpipes working to draw him. [Martel is not quite sure if she should explain more, as she isn't sure Hermione would want to hear about it.]

That sounds fascinating! I'd love to hear more about your world, if you have the time.

[Hermione loves to learn about everything ever]

Of course I have time. Though, this might be better done face to face. [She likes to talk to people, and sometimes the journal isn't enough. She has also never met Hermione in person.] Are you still in the music room?

I am.

All right. I'll be down there in a few minutes. [And a few minutes later, she's walking through the door to the music room, looking for Hermione. She then spots her by the piano.] Hello!

[gets up from the piano bench, turning the radio off even though the journal records anyway]

Martel! I'm so pleased to meet you in person!

[Martel walks over to her and then sits down gracefully on the edge of the piano bench, looking up at Hermione.] So am I. Talking over the journal is one thing, but meeting someone in person is still better.

Yes, I always like it better. I've grown a bit more used to the journals but seeing someone in person is more comfortable for me.

And I really did want to meet you in person. So, would you like me to start at the beginning? It is a long story, if I am going to explain.

I don't mind at all. Here, let's sit down somewhere a bit more comfortable.

[gestures to some convenient chairs]

[Martel moves over to a chair, sitting down in it.] Feel free to ask questions, too. I'll answer them as well as I can.

I suppose...it all starts with the elves, when they came from Derris Kharlan, a comet that now orbits Aselia. They then planted a mana tree, now called the Giant Kharlan Tree, and from it sprung the first life form, a protozoan.

[Hermione sits as well, listening to Martel's story. It's so fascinating to her how the different worlds function]

So the elves helped create life in your world?

In a way. They planted the tree, which creates mana. Mana is the source of all life and magic in Aselia. When something is born, the mana is taken from the surrounding area or the Tree itself. And when something dies, even the smallest blade of grass, the mana returns to the environment or the Tree. When a spell is cast, the mana is taking from the surroundings or the person's own reserve of mana.

[digests all of this quietly] So mana works in a cycle?

Yes. Mana also created the summon spirits, which represent each main element of my world. Elemental mana and elemental monsters gather around them. They can also affect the climate.

Such as... Celsius, the summon spirit of ice, lives far north and makes the continent of Flanoir a frozen wasteland. Efreet, the summon spirit of fire, on the other hand, is the source of the Triet Desert.

Amazing. In my world, magic can control the weather but usually in an unnatural way. We don't have anything like summon spirits.

Efreet and Celsius are actually opposites. They are weak against each other's element, and that holds true for any elemental monsters. The other pairs are The Sylph, wind, and Gnome, earth... Undine, water, and Volt, Lightning, ...and Shadow, darkness, and Luna and Aska are light.

Then there's the more...special spirits. Verius, who is the summon spirit of Heart, Maxwell, who is the Ruler of the Elements, and Origin, who is the King of All Summon Spirits and Ruler of Space-Time.

They almost sound like ancient gods. Are there gods in your world?

The elves do worship them, so you could say that they are gods. And no, no real gods. [She doesn't mention that she was informed that she was made into a Goddess.]

Interesting. Religion is prevelent in so many other worlds...

Can anyone meet these elemental monsters?

You need to be a summoner. They can be summoned to fight once a summoner has made a pact with the summon spirit. To make a pact, you need to fight and beat the summon spirit to prove yourself worthy, then swear on something. If you break the pact, then you cannot summon the spirit anymore. The summon spirit can only have a pact with one summoner at a time.

Some spirits, like Maxwell, require items before they will appear. Maxwell, since he is lord of all elements, requires the pact rings obtained from from Undine, Efreet, The Sylph and Gnome before he will make a pact with you. Luna refuses to make a pact without Aska, who is a large bird and often wanders the world. Hence my calling of him with my panpipes so a pact could be made.

[this is all so fascinating! Hermione listens to all of it with interest]
