Sixteenth Spell

[Hermione has taken her radio down to the music room. Hard Harry suggested they use it to broadcast music. So she is going to do just that. She taps the radio until she gets a good frequency, then begins to play the piano.

It's a simple piece but she still sounds a bit out of practice. Not much chance for music when you're on the run]

And why are you called that?

It's a more formal title. Wizards go a lot of different places to fix problems. So it implies I was sent to that person for a reason.

Not really. Not by humans at least.

Real magic isn't known to most humans in my world, either. Except for those who are witches and wizards, of course.

So I'm guessing you're a witch then.

I am. I didn't know until I turned eleven and got my letter.

That's funny. I started when I was eleven too.

That is funny. Maybe that's the age when magic is most easily defined in people?

Dunno, I started pretty early for a wizard.

Not that I know of. Some schools may start you at a different age, but for Hogwarts it was age eleven.

Oh, so you have special schools for witches and wizards?

We do. They're all hidden, of course. Non-wizards never even know about them.

As you'd expect. [It takes a lot to get non-wizards' attention.]

So what do you do in Hogwarts?

Most of us just take classes on different kinds of magic. We have Potions, Transfiguration, Charms, Defense Against the Dark Arts, Herbology... And older students can also choose to take classes like Care of Magical Creatures, Arithmancy, Ancient Runes...

Then we have clubs and a sports team you can join if you like.

Yes, it's quite nice. It can be a bit dangerous, of course, because we are still children. Students cast spells on each other all the time.

Of course. Wizardry - er, magic, always has its dangers.

But you have adults supervising and a controlled environment. That must make learning so much easier.

Erm... well... not always. I wouldn't exactly call Hogwarts a "controlled" environment.

Maybe not. [Dairine can only imagine what chaos a large group of young wizards can create.] A closed-off environment then. Somewhere where have the time and resources to learn, without worrying about being noticed. [Or killed.]

Yes. Though I wonder about the young wizards whose parents choose not to send them to a school.

Probably they're home-schooled or self-taught.

Personally, I don't have the option of an all-wizards school, so I go to a regular public school.

My friend Harry and I both went to a regular school... until we found out we were wizards, that is. I think with us, it was safer to go to wizard school since magic is supposed to be hidden from non-wizards.
