19 - fury of the night

[The sound that comes from the journals is hauntingly beautiful, and deeply touching. It's not unlike the song of a whale, although it's closer to a whine, since that's exactly what it is. It's a smooth, melodious sound at first, and then it lowers, becoming warbled, and it sounds astonishingly like sobbing. The sound lasts for about ten seconds in total, and doesn't repeat itself.

Toothless is sitting in the courtyard in front of the castle, looking skyward. He wouldn't continue to cry; he wasn't a hatchling, after all. Still, having your best friend leave when he had been there with you nearly the entire time the both of you had been relocated to this area was hard. So he'd allowed himself at least one cry.

Now, though, he sits in silence, head falling and then drooping.

And he sits.]

[Beautiful though the sound may be (and it is- that's what drew Galadriel out to the courtyard), Galadriel's initial reaction to seeing a dragon of any sort is to freeze in place. She's come to realize that not all dragons are like those of her world, but it still takes time to fight down that initial, instinctual, feeling of dread.

After a time, though, she calms herself enough to notice the dragon's posture. He's...really a sad little thing, isn't he? It's in her nature to want to comfort. So she stands silently for a moment, torn between the impulse to approach and the instinct to leave quietly before he notices her.]

[there's some quiet clip-clopping across the flagstones before Luna settles down next to him.]

[Toothless' eyes open, and he looks at Galadriel briefly.

If he sees the conflict within her, he gives no evidence to it. He just looks at her quietly a little more before closing his eyes once more.

A deep sigh escapes him.]

[forbiddenfriend]

[Toothless leans against her a bit, a soft, sad little hum coming from him.]

[she reaches up for a nuzzle, responding to that hum with one of her own - a snatch of an old lullaby.

A few moments later:] What is the matter, Toothless?

[Logic and compassion eventually overcome whatever fear she does feel and she approaches, taking care to make more noise than she naturally does when she walks; the last thing she wants is to frighten him.]

What ails you, my friend? [She slowly, hesitantly, reaches her hand out to touch him, fully prepared to pull it back swiftly if he should make any sign of an objection.]

[He'd been in the kitchen when he'd heard the sound, though now he investigates. It sounded sad, and he was not without sympathy. It's a few minutes before he finds Toothless in the courtyard. It seemed the dragon was having all sorts of trouble these days. He approaches, though now without unhooking his sword a few meters away, and leaning it against a stone bench for now.]

What's the matter, friend?

[Another pony joins the party. She silently comes up to him, and nuzzles the top of his head affectionately.]

[huffythedragon]

[Oh, oh that doesn't sound good at all.

Spike seeks the other dragon out, and once he does, comes in close to hug his leg]

What's wrong buddy?

[Oh. It was that reptile thing that had tried to cheer him up a while ago. Conan approaches him curiously.]

Did something happen?

[Harry hears the whine. Instead of replying over the journal he seek the dragon out, knowing it can't talk.]

You seem down, mate. Something happened? [He asks as he approached the dragon in the courtyard a few moments later.]

[The nightfury doesn't respond to her movement or her voice, besides the light twitch of a headfin. He's not in the mood for charades right now, and since that's usually the only way he can only get some slightly more complicated points across... well, not much of a point in doing much at all, then.

The touch does get a bit of a reaction out of him, though. He feels the soft fingers on his crown, and opens his eyes once more to look at Galadriel.

Now that he's paying proper attention, your fear is obvious, Galadriel. Why do you continue to stay?]

[He opens his eyes to look to her for a long time. It was the kind of gaze that said, he'd wish he could tell her, but there was only so much he could tell with hums and gestures.

Maybe Luna could see the loneliness in him anyway. How he'd felt lost even, with the friend he'd grown so close to gone without a trace.

Finally, he closes his eyes and dips his head again.]

[Is it so obvious? She thought she was doing fairly well, using only the caution one would in dealings with any wild animal. But animals tend to be able to sense such things, particularly intelligent ones, so perhaps it's not surprising.

His reaction encourages her though, so she'll take to gently petting his head.]

[James is drawn to the sound, interested, and then even more so when he realises it's a dragon. Strange thing was, it didn't look like any of the ones he'd known about back home. A new species?

He was extremely curious now, and walked into the courtyard. Keeping his distance, and a hand ready to grab his wand, he watched the creature. Maybe it was native.]

[well, loneliness is (was?) pretty much her byword. So she says nothing, and merely wraps a warm, feathery wing around as much of his back as she can reach.]

[forbiddenfriend]

[If he were in a better mood, he might have even teased the elf a bit. As it is, it's hard enough to lift his head.

Even so, he can't help but be a bit curious himself. He can feel her reservation, her hesitance in her hands. He can't quite understand her purpose for staying then, since the two were complete strangers to each other.

...still, it was a nice feeling. He closes his eyes and presses slightly into the hand. A soft, melancholy hum comes from him.]

[It's alright, Toothless. You're hardly the only one not to understand her motivations.

She smiles at the hum and the hesitancy melts away.]

Such a musical creature. Do not fear little one, I have sung enough laments of my own.

[forbiddenfriend]

[The nightfury doesn't respond, save for the twitch of a headfin. His tail moves only to wrap around him. It's somewhat reminiscent of a person hugging themselves.]

[The clip clops catch Toothless' attention, and he actually perks up a little. And when she nuzzles him, he nearly shoves his head underneath her chin, rubbing into her neck.

You're his closest friend here now, Fluttershy. Please don't leave anytime soon.

Or ever.]

[He opens his eyes when he feels the little dragon, then leans down a little, sniffing at him and affectionately bumping his nose against a spike, even if it is a weak gesture.]

[3_butterflies]

[No plans on that, buddy. Unless you count a canon update. She settles down on the ground, keeping her head in top of his. She begins gently humming a soft lullaby, not knowing what his sadness is about, but isn't about to pry.]

[He sees Conan come up, and can't help but give a little snort of satiric amusement. So the roles have been flipped, huh?

But that can't lift his spirits for very long. He turns away, a soft, sad hum coming from him.]

[Oh, it was this silly man. He gives him a glance before letting his head sink again.

It's not really like he could answer anyway.]

[Toothless' headfin twitches at the sound. He knows you're there, boy, but he's not interested in you right now, and continues to sit there, all but motionless.]
