4 - 9 = 5

12 x 3 =

5 + 5 = 10

14 x 6 =

2 x 9 = 11

[there's a pause when Dextera realizes that he is writing in the journal before he scribbles out a note.]

I don't understand some of these. Is it okay if someone helped me?

The x. I tried one but the book says it's wrong. [which is weird because 2 + 9 is 11 but apparently it's not.]

There's the 'x'. And something called 'dividing'.

The "x" is for multiplication! It's what you do when you need to add the same kinds of numbers together a few times!

Dividing is how it sounds. You take a number and...split it up equally!

Yep! It's shortcut adding! Like 12 x 3 actually means 12 + 12 + 12! It's just simplified to save time and space.

And exactly! Or into thirds or fourths, whatever you need to cut it down by.
