[For once, Spike isn't in the library. He's in the kitchen, finishing off baking a delicious cheesecake for The Boy Who Hates Birthdays. He's even wearing his manly pink apron, because do you know how hard it is to get baking stuff out of scales?

It's really freaking hard, okay? His journal is open as he potters around the kitchen, clambering up on chairs to reach the counters as he works]

I can't believe the castle didn't pick me to rescue somepony ['somepony' being Rarity, of course] I've been perfecting my gallant rescue routine for ages. [In his head] I'd rescue the fair lady in five seconds flat.

Heeeeeey buddy. I have something for you in the kitchen.

Not at all. he was very nice. I took his temperature, we gave him some soup, and then I sung him a lullaby to help him sleep.

The kitchen? I'm not far away from there. [Because he'd been in the lobby reading and ignoring everyone. Antisocial mystery geeks have the most interesting birthdays.]

Well, we needed it. We have to collect very strange items in order to complete the quest.
