[Jon had heard a little while ago that Ted had gone home. He'd been so busy dealing with the arrival of so many members of his family that he's hardly had time to process it. Though he hadn't known him long, he and Ted had shared a bond. They'd made a vow to go down fighting, to resist the castle and do everything they could to protect the people they cared for. With so much of his family in the castle now, and with people like Jaime Lannister and Viserys Targaryen sharing space with them, it felt more important than ever that Jon step up his training. Today finds him out on the grounds, a man-shaped target planted in the ground, and an archery target some distance away, as Jon seeks to strengthen his two notable combat skills. Anyone out on the grounds today will find Jon hacking away at his straw dummy with a wooden practice sword, only to switch gears every once in a while, to shoot at the target he's pinned up while his heart rate is still up.]

[Filtered to those with extensive knowledge of archery, and those with the best interests of the castle and it's people in mind.]

Though I am a Ranger, I must admit that my skill with a bow and arrow isn't at it's absolute best. I'm wondering if those of you who specialize might help me improve my skill with a bow? We could work out some system of payment, if necessary, otherwise I'll just owe you a debt for helping me.

Archery, huh? I'm pretty handy with a bow. I reckon I could show you a few tricks.

I would appreciate it. I'm no novice, but my duties before coming here kept me from refining my skills as much as I would have liked. Skill with a sword took priority, but I realize that I should have as much skill with both as I can gain.

Sword, huh? Interesting choice. I prefer knives.

[He doesn't know about medieval peeps just yet.]

Knives have their uses, but I prefer to keep a foe at a distance if I can. If not with a bow, than with my sword.

[He'll find out soon enough, and all his skill with a bow will be of more benefit than even Hawkeye knows.]

You'll probably have more use than me.

Oh, I wouldn't be so sure about that. I think warriors of all kinds have their uses, no matter their specialty. A skilled archer can be more useful than a swordsman, in the right circumstances. I could have used you in my world. I'm part of an order of men that protects the kingdom of my home from atop a massive wall of stone and ice. We didn't have nearly as many skilled archers as we should have had, not long ago.

Well, I'm not sure how much use I would have been.

Still, I'm pretty sure I could use a sword if needs be. I'm better at unarmed combat than with a weapon I don't know.

You might be surprised. The Wall in my home was practically built for archers and trebuchets, to keep foes seeking to cross it at bay.

Many make more of swordplay than it actually is, mistaking instinct for technique. Though the same could be said of us all. I can handle a dagger as well as anyone, but I wouldn't choose it for combat, had I other choices.

I only use weapons I'm trained in. Saves any nasty surprises.
