[The disadvantage to never sleeping at night means Haymitch is often awake when the castle begins its late night shenanigans. One moment, he was drowning his sorrows in a bottle with his good friend Captain Morgan and the next he was sitting on a bed with a familiar babbling doctor.

Whatever was going on, experience had taught him nothing good could come of it. After briefly checking to make sure they weren't handcuffed together (because he could really do without being handcuffed to someone who didn't have a mute button) he gives her a poke on the side of the head, ignoring the open journal on the sidetable]

Elliot, wake up, the castle's doing something again.

[He glances around the room, briefly noting the crib in the corner. Huh. He never thought kids could come with their parents to this craphole. Not that young. Who would even be able to spend enough time in this woman's company to produce a child anyway?

He gives her another 'friendly' jab, before leaning over the bed. That bottle had to have rolled off somewhere...]

And your baby's making noises. You should go deal with that.

[He takes a good step back away from the crib. He even looks a little frightened]

Okay, no. This isn't cool. Or cute. This isn;t something that was ever supposed to happen.

What, you having kids? Or having one with me? Because I have to say either situation does seem really, really weird and kind of unnatural to me, even if the kid is pretty adorable.

Having kids ever. I didn't particularly want to give the Capitol another lamb to throw to the slaughter.

Right. Because of the whole child murder fest things they have every year. I remember you telling me about those.

Exactly. Once you've lived through something like that, you don't want to bring a kid into that world. To give them that fate.

Makes sense. I mean, I always really wanted kids myself and sometimes I was kind of worried I'd never find the right guy to settle down and have them with but I've never had to go through anything like that. I imagine I might feel differently if I had.

Trust me, you would have. There's no worse feeling in the world.

...And now this place has given us this bundle of... [he stares at the baby for a moment] joy.

Why? Why would they give us a child? I mean, in what world is that a good idea? You don't even like me, and no offense or anything, but you're kind of too much of a jerk to be a very good father.

Hey, just trying to be honest here. [A beat.] Do you think the castle will let us do that, or will it try to force us to do it together?

I don't know, I'm willing to test the theory.

I think pretty much everyone could have. [He sighs, going back to the crib] I don't know the first thing about babies.

Luckily, I do. I mean, mostly in a clinical sense, because I'm a doctor and all that and I don't actually have any kids of my own and never got to help with my siblings due to being the youngest one and everything but still, it's better than nothing, right?

I had a little brother, but it's not the same.
