[Mistress has a baby, but you'd really be hard-pressed to get her to admit it. So, for the past few days, there has been a rowdy, ill-behaved little boy running around in the lobby. He doesn't seem to speak very much, though he does laugh, and he's fond of magically zapping people to watch them jump.

But Mistress doesn't care. She just lets him run roughshod all over the place without so much as a glance. But anyone in the lobby might notice something a little suspicious about the way she glares when he peeks around the corner of her throne and then turns her footstool to life.

It trots out from under her feet, and Mistress adeptly catches the little boy by the upper arm.]

Stop it, Child. Leave me be.

[The little boy sullenly sucks his bejeweled binky and pouts at her until she releases him, whereupon he goes back to running around and casting magic at people.]

A conscience isn't an organ. It's not necessary.

It's not like an appendix. Having a conscience is what makes you human, that's all there is to it.

No it isn't. Being human just means you have all the right parts. A conscience has nothing to do with that.

Being physically human isn't the only thing that makes you human.

So, by your argument, an elf can be human? Or a dwarf or a vampire?

[He frowns at that, because he's never heard of any of those things wanting to be human. They're all pretty terrible.]

They can live as a human. Sure.

Living as human and being human are two different things entirely.

Look, that's your opinion. I think anybody who has a conscience and tries to look out for other people -- that's pretty human in my book.

So then you're not human. You seem to have no interest in "looking out" for Child, despite the fact that you obviously think me to be a terrible caretaker. Someone with a conscience -- a human -- would take him in an instant.

[He just smiles.] You're not going to manipulate me with that crap, lady. Knock it off.

I'm not manipulating you. I'm just saying, if that's the case, you're not a human by your definition or mine.

I fall back to my earlier theory. That you're some kind of male succubus, though you look nothing like a normal incubus.
