It doesn't matter how you make it work, just so long as you do something to think about it. See...

[your resident jerkface vampire is sitting somewhere on the front lawn with a toddler--a red-eyed, black-haired girl, kind of gangly, kind of awkward on her feet--standing across from him. he cups his hands to his mouth and his eyes glow as he breathes into them, and when he opens his hands again a little dragon made of fire springs up and flies around the girl's head; she shrieks in delight and tries to grab it, but it disappears in a puff of smoke.

but like that would stop her. she tries to do the same thing but gets excited and tries way too hard--sparks fly out of her hands and skitter off like little fireflies that eventually start to dance back down towards the grass. she giggles and starts trying to catch those too, like she's already forgotten what she'd originally tried to do.

Zelman'll just sit there, looking pretty... happy... and making sure she doesn't accidentally set the lawn on fire.]

[Pharos is sitting a few feet away from Zelman, meanwhile, mostly just watching this display. He seems pretty enthralled by the whole thing, but when isn't he fascinated by the things Zelman can do?]

She seems to become distracted quite easily, does she not? [Though he laughs, so it's obvious he's kind of amused by it.]

That speaks of the nature of children, I think. [he just leans back, propping himself up with the weight locked in his shoulders.] Everything's new. It's all very exciting.

It reminds me somewhat of when I first arrived in the Castle... Though I must admit, it is still quite exciting at times. [He smiles, and props his elbows on his knees - careful to balance himself so he doesn't do something clumsy. He gets better at looking the part whenever he uses this form.]

...I must admit, I am glad that she is such a happy child.

[said happy child is starting to tug on Zelman's sleeve because all of her sparks have disappeared. D: but with a snap of his fingers a few more sparks show up and flutter off like butterflies for her to chase again.]

In some ways, you aren't really all that old, are you?

[he's got to focus on the butterflies. fire is very difficult to keep in any sort of "form" for long.]

I can agree, though. It's much easier this way.

As far as having experiences of my own go, I am not even three years old.

[He laughs, and it comes out in that strange, dark way that it does when his smiles are a little too sharp and he doesn't look very much like the child he pretends to be most of the time.]

Perhaps that is why I have come to enjoy breaking rules.

[But he watches the little girl, and his laugh and smile become relatively "normal" again.]

I wonder if she will actually grow any bigger than this? ...between the two of us, that could prove problematic. [You know... since Zelman is like a billion years old and Pharos can basically be however old he wants to be.]

[Faye has to stop on her way back into the castle and watch this for a minute, hand on her hip, shaking her head just a little.

and she really was planning on just heading on her way a minute later, but... the snake-eyed toddler that she has on a leash gives a giddy shriek, and tries to go running over to the two fire-breathers]

Hey, knock that off-- we gotta go back inside.

Nooo!

[the toddler stops what she's doing immediately and stops to stare at the two of them with big, wide eyes. Zelman just looks over casually, though that happy expression is wiped off his face. him? being happy? you were imagining things.]

Yo. Trouble?

[yeah, she saw that look, mister]

Trouble?... [oh, look at that. the toddler suddenly has black feathered wings now, leaping and fluttering off the ground to try and pull the leash out of her mother's hands from different angles] ...No.

But, if you said you felt like babysitting, I wouldn't complain.

[the toddler stares more at the winged kid now, since that's where all the weird not-human stuff is.]

I'm not particularly interested.

You sure? You seem pretty comfortable with that one.

[maybe a little bit of a smirk]

I'm not a babysitter, and mine isn't a menace.

[--though his toddler does suddenly teleport right in front of where the leashed kid is flapping around. because walking is for losers. she's still just staring up at them with big... round eyes...]

She's not a menace...

[and then the menace gives one of those excited toddler shrieks of delight as the other girl teleports]

Magic! [and then continues her fluttering trying to get to her]

[Felix is also heading outside with his red-haired, elven-eared toddler happily walking along at his side. The second the flurry of sparks from the girl catch his attention he giggles and reaches out]

Lights!

Ryuga, no! [He barely manages to keep the boy from racing off across the lawn]

[unfortunately, that's all it takes. the little girl very quickly loses interest in the sparks because she will be staring, wide-eyed, at the two of them.

...Zelman's looking at them too, but at least he has the social capacity to be casual about it. and blink sometimes. the happy look has definitely disappeared from his face. now he just looks normal.]

Yo. Are we missing something?

[The boy stops as well and stares curiously back at her.

Felix mostly has his eyes on the vampire, slowly processing the expression he saw ghost away from his face before he was interrupted.]

Last I checked I am plus one something.

[there may end up being a staring contest there. but she'll... tilt her head a little...? what even are these people? they're people, right? D:

Zelman, meanwhile, looks back at his kid.] That seems to be going around.

[The boy blinks and then waves at her hesitantly.]

Indeed. [He passes up the chance to poke fun at a simple observation like that, despite the fact that Zelman probably would have done the same if their positions were reversed]

Did we interrupt a lesson?

[she waves back...!]

No, no. Just a little play.

[though the kid doesn't seem to be done--she suddenly teleports from where she's standing to right in front of Felix's kid. hello friend!]

[ Uru just missed that little display, so she's not sure what she's in for as she strolls up towards the castle. She's heard all about the babies through the journal, though she can't help but feel a little tinge of sadness that Akiko didn't return for the second year in a row. Maybe it didn't always work if the other parent wasn't around.

As soon as she spots this little girl, she makes a beeline for her. ADORABLE CHILDREN... ]

[Pharos can tell Uru is around, of course, but he hadn't expected her to take notice of the little girl, let alone come over; but he practically beams when she does, because momma... he was worried she wouldn't get to meet Nephele.]

[Zelman turns to look, smile fading subconsciously out of habit (and not 'cause he particularly dislikes her or anything--smiling is just bad). Nephele also stops what she's doing, turning to stare at the crazy thing approaching her with big... red eyes...]

[ PAUSE to look at Pharos. ]

Ohh, Pharos is big today!

[Nephele just staaares at Uru until SUDDENLY SHE'S BEING PICKED UP. She immediately bursts into a loud half-giggle-fit, half-shriek, and reaches to touch Uru's face.

Pharos, on the other hand, laughs. Nephele seems okay for the moment, so he doesn't see a point in getting up.]

I have been big for the past several days! I found it rather difficult to pick Nephele up while I was small.
