Seventh Lesson // 40 Miles from the Sun

[Those out in town tonight will notice an unusual sight. Jono's outside various businesses, busking for caisos where he can get them. He'll approach a business, talk to whoever's working and ask if he can plug his amp in for a while, and then clear out once they start to complain about the noise. He's been at this all day, so there''s plenty of chances to catch him out any about. These are the songs he's playing today, playing a different arrangement every time he stops someplace new. He's got his journal with him, like always, but he's really only half-assed listening between songs.]

_{[Vanyel was still getting used to the face that songs in other worlds were more about personal stories and feelings rather than getting across important information or passing on legends like a tavern ditty. But they were... nice, all the same. He found the intriguing, and hoped that such things might catch on his own world. Certainly he would be using it to release some of his feelings, if he could write songs at all. He came across him during the Foo Fighter's son, cocking his head to listen, a bag of apples in his hand.]}

[He looks up at his visitor after finishing, flexing his fingers as they stiffened during the last big solo.]

That's a way of putting it. It was written about a woman who wouldn't let someone's legacy die. Her husband was a famous musician about 20 years ago, and he committed suicide due to a pretty serious drug addiction. She's been doing her damndest to cash in on his legacy ever since, but his two bandmates aren't having any of it. One of 'em's the bloke who wrote the song.

I am not used to songs being used for that. Most of the ones from my world are either silly tavern songs or meant to teach history.

[Jono can tell just by looking at him that this guy's not from earth, so he's not surprised.]

Yeah, music where I come from's used for all sorts of things. Telling a story, expressing emotions or ideas you can't put into words, or sometimes just for fun. Really depends on who's writing the music.

I see. I have heard other songs like these, but they're still new to me. The closest we get are stories of lost loves or the farmer's daughter running off with the local bandit.

Well, you're talking to the right bloke, then. I like to think of myself as something of an expert on the music of my world from the past 40 years or so, so I can give ya a bit of an education, if you'd like.

[He nods.]

Jonothan Starsmore. Friends call me Jono.

I would like that, actually. Music has always been a passion of mine, if you have the time.

Jono's fine. About the only people who call me Jonothan are Galadriel, and my mother.

[He chuckles.]

As a matter of fact, I do. I've got one other "student", though music's not her subject, so I've got plenty of spare time.

Wonderful. I wish I could say I could play with you, but... that is my loss. I cannot sing or play music.

_{[There is enough in his tone to suggests that this really does pain him, the loss of his music.]}

That's a tough one. Don't know what I'd do with myself if I couldn't play. My music's about the most mundane hobby I've got, helps me get my head straight.

[He nods.]

I'd be more than happy to share a bit of music history with ya, if for no other reason than to fill that void.
