[Durge can be found in the library today, settled into an armchair with a book open on his lap. He's wearing a rather intense look on concentration on his face as he flips a page, as well as a large, purple, curly-tailed cat draped across the back of his muscular shoulders.

He's also muttering softly to himself, and perhaps hasn't noticed that his Pokemon has flipped the journal open with her tail.]

If these things called 'ah-toms' are so small, how does one know they exist at all?

If you use a microscope, you can see atoms. But, it would have to be a rather powerful one, not the normal run-of-the-mill kind such as one would find in like, a chemistry class.

[this guy's in the library too, looking for things that'll help him try to figure out how all this crazy magic castle stuff works. he's kind of in the same area... and can't help but eavesdrop a little.]

[Huey happens to be in the library today too, his nose deep in a book about artificial intelligence, when he hears Durge's rhetorical question. His own Porygon floats overhead, offering it's own inquisitive Pory? every so often, every time Huey, has to squint at something.]

Oh...uhh...it's thanks to modern technology that we know they exist now. Microscopes powerful enough to see matter at it's most basic level.

Even normal microscopes are unheard of in my world. At least in the Dominions. Tarras perhaps could have learned the art to bend glass in such a manner, though I never say one.

Oh, well that's unfortunate. That's basically the only way you can see an atom to prove it's existence, though.
