[Durge can be found in the library today, settled into an armchair with a book open on his lap. He's wearing a rather intense look on concentration on his face as he flips a page, as well as a large, purple, curly-tailed cat draped across the back of his muscular shoulders.

He's also muttering softly to himself, and perhaps hasn't noticed that his Pokemon has flipped the journal open with her tail.]

If these things called 'ah-toms' are so small, how does one know they exist at all?

I do not understand either, Miss Maudie. I imagine Lady Grace could have explained it to me, if I had known back then to ask...

[The cat trills and the knight pauses to pat her on the head before turning back to his reading with a sigh]

If you use a microscope, you can see atoms. But, it would have to be a rather powerful one, not the normal run-of-the-mill kind such as one would find in like, a chemistry class.

[Oh...whoops...he's a little embarrassed at having been caught musing, but it would be rude not to answer]

Even normal microscopes are unheard of in my world. At least in the Dominions. Tarras perhaps could have learned the art to bend glass in such a manner, though I never say one.

Oh, well that's unfortunate. That's basically the only way you can see an atom to prove it's existence, though.

A microscope? Perhaps. You could ask around, maybe someone has seen one. Unless you know where there might be some sort of lab around, and, then I can show you.

[this guy's in the library too, looking for things that'll help him try to figure out how all this crazy magic castle stuff works. he's kind of in the same area... and can't help but eavesdrop a little.]

You think that's crazy, quarks are even smaller.

Quarks are the things that atoms are made out of. [...he pauses, putting a book back on the shelf and properly looking over.] Well, technically quarks make up protons and neutrons, which make up the nucleus of the atom, but that's more than most people really need to remember about them.

I doubt I will ever understand it.

[Huey happens to be in the library today too, his nose deep in a book about artificial intelligence, when he hears Durge's rhetorical question. His own Porygon floats overhead, offering it's own inquisitive Pory? every so often, every time Huey, has to squint at something.]

Oh...uhh...it's thanks to modern technology that we know they exist now. Microscopes powerful enough to see matter at it's most basic level.

That's no joke. I mean...it's men like Albert Einstein who've made our culture great, with their contributions to science. It's thanks to them that a lot of the modern conveniences we've got access to are even possible!

[He reaches up to give Porygon an affection scratch, thinking of the fact that Porygon itself was the product of such science.]

Perhaps. I have not had a chance to make a study of everything here. I have lately only been concerned with this Earth science called chemistry...it is similar to the alchemy I was acquainted with back home.

I can't say I've heard about anything like that, but I'm not exactly an Elder...

Why would you have to be an Elder to know such things?

They're usually the ones with knowledge back home. Scholars and such.
