On the kitchen counter is an instruction sheet for a Torta Pane Degli Angeli among packets of flour and sugar, piles of eggshells, a large bowl of egg yolks and one cake that literally fell flat. Everything is dusted with a generous coating of flour and icing sugar, like the girl currently beating egg whites with gusto.

They are important, too, and our time will be known best for its art, but I have heard few women's names.

The history books do not record all things. Perhaps they are patrons of the arts, and I shall be one as well.

If I'm going to listen to familiar voices, I would hope that I would be talking with them, not just listening.

Even so. The loveliest sounds to wake to are that of my mother and father talking, or my brothers playing with cards.
