[The journal opens to the sounds of sniffles and short, quiet sobs as Nepeta tries to catch her breath and calm herself long enough to speak.]

Umm... I just watched some Earth movies that someone told me were really good. But they didn't tell me how sad they are!

Oh, wait! If you haven't seen these movies, this is your spoiler warning. You should turn the page if you don't want to be spoiled.

[A small, olive teardrop falls onto the page, but Nepeta's quick to wipe it away. She handwrites in big, bold lettering: SPOILERS BELOW. Then, she switches back to dictation.]

The Dog and the Fox was good, but they were supposed to be friends furever! [SNIIIIIIIFF.] The dog was just doing what it was trained to do! It wasn't anything purrsonal, you know? But the fox still got so sad and they weren't friends anymore. I mean, he told him that he was a hunter but the fox was all [Her tone dips low] "No I'm a fox, I do what I want" and they both got in trouble and it was just... pawful.

And then the fox's lusus put him in the forest all by himself! I know she was trying to purrtect him and all but it was still really sad! Nobody wants their lusus to leave them like that!

It was a good movie, but I just wasn't purrpared for all of the feelings that came along with it, you know? [EXHALE.]

I also saw The Royal Lion with Vwiskers.

[She takes a moment to collect herself.]

His lusus! His lusus!! He was only trying to save him from the stampede, but HE got stampeded instead! It wasn't fair! That creepy other lion was such a jerk! He just wanted to be the king and he didn't care who got hurt beclaws of it! Oh, it makes me so mad I could just--!!

[Something is thrown across the room, hitting a wall in the distance with a soft thud. (It's a ball of yarn.)]

And the look on the little lion's face when his lusus was just laying there... And he wasn't moving and he wouldn't get up...

[She can't. She can't finish. She starts to sniffle again.]

Ugh, and don't get me started on the movie Ol' Howler.

These movies didn't phase me when I was your age.

Oh no. [ he's already pretty 8( at the rest of this, but then she ends with that??? ] What happens in that last one you said?

No, Tavros! [She hiccups] I don't want to talk about it. It's too sad!

Well, I know, I sort of guessed because you seemed pretty upset, but, you can't just mention it, and then not explain it. —Uh, no, I mean, I guess you can, but I was just curious about it, mostly.

Dictation furever! OH NEPETA...

Movies about animals do tend to be rather sad. I wish I knew why.

[Attempting to calm herself by taking deep breaths]

Yeah, I'll be okay. Are all of your Earth movies about animals this sad?

Not all of them! I think I remember seeing some films with animals that ended on a happier note, albeit they all had a bit of darkness to them. I was a bit more enchanted by my Poppop's vaudeville performances, to be honest!

Er, let's see...I specifically remember The Secret of NIMH to be quite nice. Have you tried that yet?

[wagers]

[EYEROLL.]

That lion movie was so dumb, though! If the stupid prince just listened to his lusus and didn't wander off!

Yeah, but how was he supposed to know that he would be betrayed by his own family? He trusted him!

...I hate how, in The Dog and the Fox, they're best friends until some nasty old guy takes one of them away, and then when they meet up again when they're grown up, everything is different and awkward and hard.

[Bit familiar.]

I can't hardly deal with that movie!

I wish they would have just grown up together and been friends. You can see that they still care a pawful lot about each other at the end, but it's just not the same beclaws they have diffurent lives now. I guess life is like that sometimes.

Yeah. Unfortunately, it is.

[A pause.]

I guess the ending is kind of hopeful, though--they still think about each other and try to protect each other, even if they can't be the close friends they used to be.

Y-Yeah, those are sad movies.

I was told that these "Disney" movies are suppawsed to be light-hearted. Parts of them were, but they were mostly just sad!

They're not all sad! Some are really nice, like the Maiden and the Monster is really nice.

... Wow. I haven't seen them, but those do sound depressing. I thought Earth movies were big on happy endings. [Then again her exposure to Earth movies is largely ... what John has showed her dsklaf;j]

They do have happy endings, but not before there's some really pawful make-you-want-to-cry moments!

And once again the horror of Earth movies descends on us. Seriously, do they have any moves that aren't horrifying or depressing? Because as much as they say they do, I'm really not inclined to believe them.

I know they exist beclaws I've seen one before, but I don't remember what it's called. Maybe they are just very few in number.

Ahh, I didn't really watch Disney movies. I mean, I watched a couple, but my favorites were ones made by Studio Ghibli, like Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke.
