So the guests we had during the festival -- one of them was Avatar Roku, a.. well, sort of celebrated hero from my world. Maybe - well. It's complicated. But he's still kind of a hero of legend, and I also kind of chickened out while he was here.

.. and I'm not entirely sure why I'm telling the whole castle this, either. [A small puff of irritation.] Just, um. If you have a chance at something here, I guess, don't chicken out and let it get away. I guess. Agh, I'm rambling worse than my brother.

[And, sounding slightly embarrassed, she shuts the journal.]

[waterbends]

Ack --!!

[And down she goes, nearly smacking facedown into the dirt and catching herself at the last moment. She rolls hard, trying to spring to her feet.]

[jetset]

[ he maintains his distance, waiting until she's done so. ]

[waterbends]

I'm gonna learn swords, you know.

[Flinging a series of ice spikes at him.]

[jetset]

[ he smashes them to bits as they come, dodging some, and others tearing through the sleeves of his shirt and the leg of his pants. teasingly: ]

Please don't. Then I really might not be able to beat you.

[waterbends]

Yeah, right. I've barely even held them, but I just thought it might be a good idea --

[A whip of water around his leg, trying to trip him up again.]

-- in case the castle takes my waterbending away.

[jetset]

Good thinki--

[ --whoa! he manages to dodge it this time, and backs out of her range. he hooks his swords together and swings; not aiming to hit her, but trying to scrape the ground and raise dust in her face ]

[waterbends]

[The attack succeeds! She's left sputtering by the dirt and dust at her face, hastily wiping at her eyes with her sleeve, well aware that she's left wide open as she does.]

[jetset]

[ jet swings the swords around, grabbing the one at the end by its hilt, and closes the gap between them to point the daggered end at her chest, staying out of the range of the dust. ]

I think we can agree that that wasn't actually me winning.

[waterbends]

[She has a handful of water from somewhere, flinging it up to catch and freeze the end of the blade as she throws herself backwards.]

I think you're probably right.

[jetset]

[ uncool! he steps back as well, knocking the blade against a tree to knock off as much ice as he can. ]

[waterbends]

[Laughing out loud.]

But you're welcome to give up at any time.

[jetset]

[ he grins. ]

Didn't anyone ever tell you? Freedom Fighters never give up.

[ the part she froze was the hilt, so even after the ice is mostly gone, it's cold to the touch and hard to grip, but he bears it, and swings at her waist. ]

[waterbends]

And didn't anyone ever tell you?

[She hops back, quickly -]

Waterbenders never lo-

[But Katara isn't used to worrying about trees when she fights and collides hard with the trunk of one. She screws up her face in a whine.]

Ow.

[jetset]

[ jet, who had been about to step forward in pursuit, holds himself back, and does not smile. he's a good friend.



alright maybe he smiles a little. ]

You okay?

[ dro, who has been here the whole time, not like laura forgot about him or anything, also gives an inquiring growl/whine/thing at katara. ]

[waterbends]

[She drops the offensive and defensive both to rub the back of her head, nose still wrinkled pitifully.]

I'm fine. Just - jeez. These things are hazards.

[jetset]

[ he lowers his swords for now, tilting his head at her. ]

Yeah, they're easy to forget about, but hard to fight with, especially when they're this close together.

[waterbends]

I remember when you and Aang fought.

[.. it's a little rushed. Those aren't memories she likes.]

You're really good at using them to your advantage.

[jetset]

[ hey remember that time you froze me to a tree.

he shrugs, passing a hand through his hair. ]

Out of necessity, more than anything else. I've been doing it for years.
