Not many, just - [recalculating...] - three others. Flynn, Rinzler, and Alan-1. But we're gonna wanna meet somewhere with a lot of space, where we won't hit other people while we're practicing. Any good ideas?
[it takes him a little while to go find Rinzler and get one of his discs from him, but soon enough, he shows up with it in hand, his own disc still firmly attached to his back]
[ She leads them out and to the gardens to a semi-private area. There's only one opening in the tall hedges forming the green walls around them. It's a wide space she uses mostly for sword practice. ]
... [well, it's no Arena, that's for sure. he's used to fighting in much larger spaces. but it's usable, at least. he nods a little to himself] Yeah, this'll do. Okay, here - I'll show you how to block, first.
[he steps up and hands her the disc. the circuit line glows orange, and it makes a faint hum, like a dragonfly]
Okay. Remember the way you stood when you showed me Needle? Defensive stance is a lot like that. Only, your weapon's got a different reach. There are two kinds of blocks: one for strikes, and one for throws.
[he pauses for a second, remembering how she carried herself with the short sword] Show me how you'd block with your sword. [if she already knows how to move, this will be a little easier]
[ She stands sideways, presenting a smaller target. The disc isn't Needle so her grip on it isn't as sure. Nevertheless, she holds it up like she would her sword. ]
Okay, that's a good start - you've got your feet in the right place, so you can pivot if you need to, but you're holding the Disc wrong. [he moves over beside her and reaches out to take her wrist and gently turn it, so she's holding the Disc width-ways, like a shield] The way you were holding it was more for a strike or a throw. If you hold it this way, it's able to block more. Say my disc was coming at you like this ...
[he angles his own down against hers, and at the strike, they both glow a bit brighter for an instant]
It's a more solid block. You've got more of a chance of deflecting me. If you had it sideways ... it'd be real easy for me to angle my wrist just right with the strike and take your arm clean off. Now, if you were a program, that'd just be a case of finding a Recompiler and getting your disc repaired ... but you're a User. And I don't know how getting arms back works for you, but I'm guessing it isn't easy.
They don't grow back? ... Well, that doesn't make a whole lot of sense. [it does line up with the Once You Die That's It thing though. he's liking how Users are configured less and less]
Don't worry, though. Now that I know that I'll make sure you don't lose any in practice, either.
'Course. Now, the first thing I'm gonna show you is hand-to-hand blocks. I'll come at you, you try and block me like I showed you, arright?
[but first, he deactivates his disc, so it's blunted. that way, if she gets hit, it'll be like getting hit with an Airobie instead of a razor blade. once that's taken care of, he swings at her, from the side - a different angle than when he demonstrated the proper block method]
[good. he expected her to block, and is instantly arcing into another attack - she'll find it's a little like fighting with daggers, once they've exchanged a few blows. funny, round, glowing daggers]
CLU forever!

Uh ... I guess so, sure. We'd have to figure out a way to get you one, though ... since you weren't programmed with one.

[ Despite the words, she's calm—calm as still water—and attentive. She shifts her grip in order to hold it better in the position he showed. ]

is this where I admit I suck at writing fights?
