002 - Light the Stars (forward dated to about 2am)

[Anyone who happens to be awake at this ungodly hour or who was unfortunate enough to leave their journal open as they sleep may hear sounds of utter glee filtering through the night. It is soon followed by the sounds of someone fumbling around for something - their journal as it would become clear - and then much excited chatter.]

...Galaxies! It's possible to see multiple galaxies with nothing more than the naked eye from this world! What's more, the lights from the castle and the town seem to have minimal effect upon visibility! This... this is fantastic! Does anyone have the knowledge to assist me in building a device to take proper photographs of celestial bodies? If we can record the movements of the night sky around us...!

[He cuts himself off in his excitement.

It seems Dhaos has been effected by his very first loss. Have fun with him babbling incessantly about space for the next week or so.]

'Though exceptionally clear skies and damn good night vision isn't new to her.]

I have been studying the stars of this world, but I am unsure of what recording methods thou art speaking of.

[you mean like parchment, ink, and quill?]

[He can only get a view of the stars on one side of the castle from his room, so he's up on the roof tonight.

Dhaos smiles at the his fellow lover of all things space related. He's not quite sure what she is though. Perhaps he'll ask her later. Ah reset memories - forever causing awkward questions to be asked once again.]

Have you? Splendid! Would you care to compare notes? As for photographs, they are something like a painting, save that they are created far more quickly and by a machine.

[a smile] I would be happy to do so. [be prepared for a lot of reading. She's had almost eight months to take ridiculously meticulous notes.]

[a blink. And then something clicks and she teleports her iPad to her.] Doth that be the 'Photos' icon present on this device?

[she's learned to play a few games on that thing, but the majority of its functions still eludes her.]

[Have a slightly sleepy, yet clearly irritated voice come over the journal. That's what Sheena gets for falling asleep while reading it.]

Dhaos? What's going on? Why are you up at this hour?

Studying the movements of the cosmos.

[He says it as if it's a perfectly normal thing for someone to be doing. To be honest, it's something Dhaos does rather often since he doesn't need much sleep. He's just... quieter about it usually.]

*YAWN* I know night time is the best time for it, but aren't there better hours to do it?

[You know, when others are awake?]

Not tonight. I had to wait for the moon to set, for its light is enough to obscure quite a number of stars.

[Well, he's calmer now at least.]

Huh? I don't get that. What do you mean the light blocks them? I thought light helped you see things?

[Nice to know she can help...]

... Enjoy the stars? [ Somewhat amused. ]

Very much!

[There's a simple joy in his voice that Duke has probably never heard from the other man.]

... sounds to be so.

Do you like space too, sir?

Found it somewhat calming, yes. [ Something with the way Dhaos is speaking sounds a little off. Not the excitement... ]

Here? Would not know.

[He's had enough of staring at the ceiling trying to sleep. It's almost a relief when he hears that someone else is awake, too, and with an interesting proposition]

I might be of some use to you. I've had some experience with such devices.

That would be wonderful, thank you.

[The excitement in his voice has almost reached the level of a puppy with a new ball.]

Believe me, you're the one doing me a favor. Should I meet you somewhere?

[Careful with that - it might be contagious!]

[He's all for infecting others with his excitement. Space is wonderful after all!]

I'm currently on the roof. Is that a good location, or should we relocate to somewhere like the library?

[He won't get any arguments out of this one]

The roof is fine. It's harder to look at the stars from the library. We can relocate to there later if necessary.

[He'll be there soon!]

[Although Carol's not up on the roof of the castle she is looking out of her window and up at the night sky. She used to look up at the stars at night at her old home when her husband was out at the bar drinking again. She just found the pursuit so peaceful and tranquil even though she doesn't know anything about astronomy herself.]

The view is quite beautiful isn't it? I don't think I've ever seen so many stars around. It's been a long time since I got the opportunity to just stand and look at them.

.... Dhaos?

Maya? Hello! I haven't seen you since the false family reunion! How have you been?

[Even though she's only met him once in reality, he cheerfulness may seem a bit out of character to her.]

Uh, good! And yeah, I haven't seen you since then either.

You seem really happy today! I mean... did something happen?

[ GLaDOS really was having trouble sleeping nowadays, so she was quite awake, her head still throbbing with the chattering voices she was encountering when she heard a distinctly familiar voice over the journal.

Dhaos?

But he sounded very... enthusiastic. Oddly so. It made GLaDOS frown a little as she dictated into the journal: ]

... Are you alright?

[ You know, in the head. This doesn't sound like the quiet Dhaos she knew from the family gathering at all... Her voice is notably a little louder than normal, if only to hear herself over the chattering tones in her head. ]

Urrrgghhhhhhh....Enough of the space babble mate!

[His voice was notably slurring... it seemed as if he hadn't gotten a proper amount of sleep in a while. Though despite that, somewhere in his drowsy mutters for words he gasped an audible 'oh'... wait a minute now.]

W-wait! You're alive mate!

[He laughs in disbelief! This is great!]

W-where have you been?!!

[He's not sure he likes being told to shut up about space. The cosmos is a wondrous place after all. Terrifying if you stop to consider how many things could obliterate you in an instant, but still quite wondrous.]

Playing Minecraft.

I...

[He trailed off for a moment... pretending he knew what he was talking about.]

That uh... that sounds...

[But then he realizes very promptly that he has NO idea what Dhaos is talking about.]

You what?

Minecraft. It's a computer game that's exactly what it says on the tin.

[He perks up again.]

I built a replica of the castle in it!

[It might be described as adorable how happy he sounds at this achievement.]

Never heard of it. Izzit from your world, mate?
Because really, that's interesting. Never thought of you to be much of a builder, if I'm honest. That's terrific news, fantastic news.

[He wants to know more about this mysterious Minecraft...]
