Case 010 | Hattori Heiji | [ Dictated ]

Anyone got some suggestions for books t' read? I've read a lot mystery so don't go suggestin' things like Sherlock Holmes, Agatha Christie, or Edogawa Rampo- cause I've read all those. Always up t' re-readin' Ellery Queen though.

Well - what genre of books are you wanting to read if not mystery? The library is pretty huge, there's no way you wouldn't be able to find something.

[ As for herself - she was still working on her own book, thanks. ]

Pointless? Ah let's see. If you like a science fiction type, you could try the Traveler series?

I was always a fan of a good thriller or horror...maybe you could try some Stephen King? He's a great author if you're into that kind of thing. I must have read all of his books about three times by now.

[He's going to get a small smile and a nod of her head...even though he can't see her but still. She definitely learning to smile more which is a good thing.]

You're welcome. He's a great author. If you haven't read his earliest work like Carrie or 'Salems Lot then I would recommend them.

Well, I'm glad to be of help. It's good to hear that so many people around here enjoy to read. My husband never did like to himself. In fact, I can't remember the last time I saw him reading.

Well, reading rarely is better than not reading at all isn't it? At least you're making the effort to catch up on it now. And you're right, reading is useful for lots of things.

Well, if you're interested in the flip side of mystery stories, I always rather liked Maurice Leblanc's Lupin stories - they're about a gentleman-thief, rather than a detective.

And I know not everyone shares my penchant for the classics, but a good translation of the Metamorphases is very readable, and I rather like the myths in their original forms, rather than the pared down versions that usually get told. Likewise with the Grimms' fairy tale collections.

Oh, really? Interesting, I wouldn't have expected that.

And Ovid is a a good start - the stories are more self-contained, as opposed to some of the other classics like the Odessey.

Ah - in that case, you've probably heard at least the pared down version of much of what's in the Metamorphoses.

Have you read any of the Chinese classics, then? They're a bit longer, but still quite enjoyable.

[Also, he sounds rather pleasantly impressed with how well-read you are]

Cases...? Ah, are you a detective yourself?

[personal profile] hard_talker 2012-08-28 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
Sure. How d'you feel about fantasy? Like, the knights and magic and dragons kind? Or sci-fi?
hard_talker: ((HHH) hmmm could be)

[personal profile] hard_talker 2012-08-28 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
Hmmmm. If you liked those, you might like The Quartz Cavern... it's the first book in a trilogy about a wizard who's kind of famous in myths and stuff, where I'm from. Only, she writes it as though all his magic was actually just science he'd figured out before its time.
hard_talker: ((MH) is that so?)

[personal profile] hard_talker 2012-08-28 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, no problem. I read all the time, so... if you need more ideas after that one, just look me up.

Wow, a detective? That sounds exciting. I think you're the first detective I've met. That's definitely a good point and no one ever wants to see anyone get hurt when it can be prevented...

[She trails off thinking of her husband and others who fell victim to Walkers.]
