[Today, Jenny is sitting in the lobby, idly smoking as she flips through the journal.

After a moment, she huffs a bit and dictates to the pages.]

Not that I wish any sort of trauma on you lot, but it's a little mundane here, isn't it? When he was still here, Midnighter mentioned running out of things to do. [Or, probably more accurately, faces to pummel.] At the time I reckoned he just wasn't trying hard enough.

[She pauses, the sound of a pen tapping on the pages; she is preparing to write up some filters. When she continues speaking, it's in a more thoughtful tone, more serious.]

Is there a reason the castle's pulled us here? Obviously it feeds on us. Obviously. But specific people who are suited to specific tasks back in their world ... is there a point to bringing us here if we've got nothing to do here, no real purpose?

Or is it the potential malaise from being idle that makes us so important? Does our importance to the castle lie in the castle's unimportance to us?

The trauma will manifest itself eventually.

But to answer you question, yes, I think there might be another reason we're here.

Really? The most traumatic event I've been exposed to has been lounging on a cruise ship for a week.

[Of course there was that incident where folks were trapped in a book or whatever, but she wasn't involved in that except peripherally ...]

[The cruise ship would be traumatic to him, but Felix has a long list of things that send him off the deep end]

Give it time. I've been here awhile. There's always a lull before the madness...

I don't know if you'd call it a solid theory, but I've seen people from different world joining forces or helping each other - meetings that would not be possible in any other world but this one.

These meetings are irrelevant outside this place, though. Supposedly we lose our memories of our time here when we leave, yeah?

I've asked myself that very question several times now. I suppose I don't have an answer. Other then using us as a food source, I don't see what other purpose we serve.

You'd think it'd find an alternative food source. The'yre doing wonderful things with soy these days.

I've always wondered if the castle hand picks us like...a buffet?

Then what is it that makes us more appealing than others, I wonder?

Maybe ...it feeds off pain. Most of us seemed to be from turbulant places. I haven't met anyone here who hasn't come from someplace peaceful, or at least normal.

It's been theorised it feeds off emotion. Our happiness, our distress, our pain; that sort of thing.

I've met a few people who just live happy, mundane lives.

[She shrugged] Maybe it can feed off of any emotion ... but it has preferences. Just like we do. Maybe it has a particular flavor and we all just fit.

Well, everyone feels feelings, right? So I don't think any of us are useless to the castle.

That's true enough. But if someone lives for doing something and they can't do that thing here ... I can't imagine that'd bring about many emotions apart from the initial burst of frustration and sadness.

Eventually it'd just all drop off to numbness.

Or maybe they'd grow in a new way that they didn't expect?

Well, if it went for the positive aspects, the castle wouldn't give us all these catches to go with what good is offered.

... What's that about the castle... feeding on us? I've only just arrived [two weeks ago] so I'm unfortunately lacking in some information.

Someone really does need to put together a welcome kit.

[But anyway!!!] The reason we've been brought here to the castle, apparently, is because it feeds on our emotions. So it likes to put us through emotionally-trying, ridiculous things every so often to get its fill. Bit morbid, but what can you do.
