[Max is bored in her room and she feels like rambling at the journal. Go figure. So this is her, leaning back on her couch with one of her cats resting against her chest as she talks.]

So, here’s what I don’t get.

What’s the big on birthdays, exactly? I mean, back home it was pitched to me as one more thing to celebrate in a miserable world, but it seems like a pretty pointless thing to celebrate. It’s not like I’m Gandhi or I saved the world, or anything like that. I was just born.

[and more to the point, she wasn’t even born, she was built.]

I mean, I’ve been getting by just fine with tacking a year on every time the year changes, and it hasn’t hurt me any. It’s not killing me that I’ve never celebrated it. And what’s the big deal with age, anyway—I’m over twenty one, so I can pretty much do whatever I want, legally speaking.

[not that that would have stopped her much in the first place]

And here it seems even more pointless to pick one. It’s not like we age. I arrived here when I was twenty-one, and I’m gonna look like I’m twenty-one until the castle bounces me home, and it doesn’t matter if I’m twenty-one or fifty. Besides—half the time, people around here don’t seem all that big on celebrating them.

At this point, I’m pretty sure that a birthday is pretty pointless, so why should I bother picking one?

Well... Most people still celebrate their birthdays here because aging isn't only about physicality. It's about their experience and memories.

People just like to celebrate being alive, and for everything they've had or do have, like friends or family. Some people aren't crazy about it, though, and have their own reasons for not celebrating.

It's not for me, either. But I think it just depends on how they're raised, maybe. It's like being used to certain holidays.

It's really...unusual? Everybody has a day they were technically created. Unless you just don't know it.

Hah, I get that. [ He didn't learn his birthday until later, and only because he asked. ]

But y'know, it's never too late so start. Some people seem to enjoy it. Maybe you would too. You could just do the math to figure out the most logical possibility, or pick a date that's important to you.

Although I can identify with your sentiments a bit, I could only wonder what you meant by, 'picking one.'

I take that to mean that you're not aware of what your true birthday is, because surely, you should have a definitive date of birth.

Either way, I don't see why it should matter in this place.

My best friend Lexi made a big deal out of birthdays. They were the one day a year that was all about you. She believed we had to live every birthday to its fullest - get into the most trouble... That was pretty much her every day.

And, it's... nice to celebrate. [ A beat. ] After a while, it helps keep track of how old you are.

You don't know your birthday?

I don't know what my birthday is either. I've never had a party... but they sound really fun! You get presents and cake and you get to play the whole day.

[personal profile] childofkrypton 2012-02-07 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
... It doesn't?

I know there's a holiday where you get presents... Is that what you mean?

[personal profile] childofkrypton 2012-02-07 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
[Oooooooh] Really?! I thought it was only for special important days. [Now you've given him ideas, he's going to go ask for presents and cake now.]

[She'll look at the words appear in the pages of the journal as she listens to the voice speak, lounging in her own room as well.]

You're right. Here, of all places, it seems like it would all be a moot point, wouldn't it?
