[a few days after the Nightmare plot]
[Spike]
[in the middle of the night, a scroll appears in front of his door. Neatly bound by a silver ribbon, sealed with blue wax, and stamped with an ornate 'L,' it's probably pretty obvious who it's from.]
Dear Spike,
Selective truths - or lying by omission - are not e'er representative of what a situation actually entaileth. A truth that I failed to convey to thee earlier doth start thusly: "Hast thou e'er wondered why we continue to interact with ponies?"
We could simply sequester ourselves away into the deepest forests or the highest mountaintops and therefore avoid any sort of contact with them. Moving the heavens is not, as many may be led to believe, dependent 'pon the traditions wherein twenty or more Royal Guards must stand at attention, play instruments, and/or safeguard our lives. We are more than capable of fulfilling our most basic of duties even if we were not princesses, just as ponies are more than capable of ruling themselves should the occasion arise.
We stay because we truly, deeply care for them. We stay because being alone is simply not an option we wish to entertain. We stay because a life lived in fear of the future is no life at all. We stay because the joys outweigh the sorrows, the laughter is greater than the tears. We stay because the good we can accomplish together is much greater than what we can accomplish individually.
We stay because we love them.
Ponies are ever learning, ever forgiving. Thy friend Zecora was regarded with the utmost of suspicion 'till they learned that she meant no harm - and then she was welcomed most heartily. And I am certain thou dost remember one particular Nightmare Night, wherein a mare was also welcomed - one with more stains and sins to her name than any other in recent memory.
It only taketh one pony to reach out with a welcoming hoof, dear Spike. Given the generous nature of our little ponies (and thyself, I must admit), there is absolutely no question that thou wilt e'er be lacking in friends.
Sincerely,
Princess Luna
P.S.
And I can tell thee with no doubt in mine mind that Celestia will ne'er forget or abandon thee. After all, she did raise thee, did she not?
[the lack of any mention of Luna being his friend might be due to the fact that she assumes he won't want anything to do with her]
[/Spike]
[other than that, she's holed up in her room, lying on the floor and staring into a mirror. And aside from writing that letter, she hasn't moved since the end of the nightmare. The door isn't locked, but she's not exactly trying to be outgoing right now.]

A c t i o n ; ;
Stopping at the door, he hadn't attempted to open it, but he did give it a rather friendly knock. One of those generic knocks that were meant to be an obscure song.]
Um... um h-hello? Hello? Anyone there? Love?
[He shifted his weight from one leg to the other, hands deep in his labcoat pockets. Disregard the hellish look, unkempt hair and the dark circles against his pale skin. No one slept well.]
no subject
...Thou dost not look well.
Action forever
He got the note, of course. It took him a few hours to find the courage to read it, but read it he did. Of course it was the castle driving her to do that, to become what she'd been driven to so long ago. He felt ashamed for wanting to avoid her. Princess though she may be, she was still a pony, and whatever she may believe still his friend.
He'd already lost Arya, he wasn't about to lose Luna too. And so, he'd headed right over and let himself in. He doesn't say anything, not at first. He just quietly closes the door and moves to lie beside her on the floor]

It's okay, Luna.
no subject
I feel as if I should be reassuring thee.

[He looks down and raises his arms partially to inspect his ruffled clothes and mussed appearance.]
Haven't had much sleep...
[He smiles.]
Am I interrupting?...B-by any chance?
no subject
no subject
N...neither am I.
[He put his hand in his pocket and slinked over to her while rubbing his eye.]
Is everything alright?
no subject
no subject
[Can he sit next to you? Looking at her through the reflection, he brushed his hair back, almost asking for permission without words.]
Take it... that it you aren't either.
no subject
[a sweep of her wing] Thou may makest thyself comfortable, if thou wishest.
no subject
Your letter did that plenty. Anyway, I'm not the one who actually had that night- bad dream. I know you didn't have any control of it, Luna. And there's absolutely no hard feelings.
no subject
At least it's over!
That's the good things about dreams. Not real. Can't do anything but try and scare you.
[He tries to cheer her up, notably.]

[He pauses, speaking slower and removing his glasses. ]<,/small>
Well... I mean. They're over. So... so it doesn't matter anymore.
Things in the past and the like. We can move on. We.... um, we can all just move on. Hopefully
...Twas was one of those?
no subject
[she finally glances at him instead of his reflection. Is he trying to make her feel better?]

Then I am extremely fortunate to have thee about to teach me such things.
no subject
Everypony's fortunate to have me in their lives.
[He pauses, his own smile faltering a little] But...part of what you said is true. Eventually, I'ma gonna outlive them, aren't I?
no subject
Yes. [provided, you know, you don't keep snacking on the hoards of full grown dragons] Whatever thou wishest to do is entirely valid as well, but I myself would not trade mine friendships for anything despite that eventuality.
no subject
no subject
[and that is something she'd never wish upon him]
no subject
I won't let it go that way, I promise.
no subject
I have the utmost faith in thee. [small smile]
no subject
Well, I know I can still stick with you and Celestia. I'll be fine.
no subject
And we will ne'er leave thee. [that smile grows a bit wider] 'Though be warned, I would not become overly familiar with Celestia if I were thee; thou wilt be an e'er more enticing target for her...wit.
[sheesh. She's even (quietly) cracking a Trollestia joke. Looks like a healthy dose of baby dragon love and friendship is just what the doctor ordered.
...Not that it solves her "ARGH NIGHTMARE MOON" problem, but doing that to Spike was the worst part of it - even beyond the sanity issues and others finding out. Fixing what she can was something of a priority; the fact that he still wanted to be her friend was an unexpected gift.]
no subject
Yeah, she does really enjoy that sort of thing, doesn't she? [More than one half of the leading force of a nation probably should.
Spike had learned his friendship lessons well, even if he hadn't always been around when the girls discovered them for themselves. Writing the reports was like friendship via osmosis]
