001 Enter the Alchemist

[Sometime after the initial panic of finding himself in a strange place where books talked at you when you opened them, there were no Homunculi or anyone familiar at all, and... everything ever; much later at night after things have started to sink in, there is a polite sounding voice over the journals after a self conscious throat clearing.]

Good evening! My name is Alphonse Elric and... do any you know Brother? His name is Edward and he's the... [little] ...alchemist with a red coat.

[What more can he really say? This is still so overwhelming and ridiculous.]

...I hope I can meet you all in person soon, talking over... a book seems a bit impersonal for a first meeting. [And then, in case that made anyone think he didn't want to talk now, he hastily added:] But it's nice to meet you anyway.

Maybe you could practice out of your armour? Make it more informal and less intensive?

Suppose so. Like I said, it's a pain to get in and out of it. Should take fifteen minutes with the right help.

[That's with a squad of UNSC techies on hand]

It's special, yeah. I won't get into all the systems and sub-systems that run all the parts.

It's saved my life a fair few times.

Not much point in a soldier who can't fight. Luckily, it looks like I won't be needing to be doing too much fighting, from the way things look here.

It's almost too calm.

That's a good thing, a peaceful world is one we should all hope and strive for.

Yeah, but this? It's the wrong type of peace. Like the calm before a storm...

I dunno. Maybe I'm being paranoid.

Even if a storm does come, that doesn't mean you can't enjoy the peace before it instead of waiting for the rain to flood your house.

It's just a pity that it's hard to change the habit of a lifetime. I'll give it a try, though.
