[If anyone should happen to be in the lobby today, they might be able to spot a certain Tamer sitting quietly in a hugely overstuffed chair and drawing. It is a very peaceful scene.

Up until his new temporary loss starts.

It starts with a gradual golden glow that covers his skin and hides him from sight. Suddenly it flashes brightly and vanishes, leaving behind an intricate projection of red grid lines constantly moving over the boys skin. Anyone familiar with digital matters might be able to recognize the new addition to Takato's appearance as a grid frame.

Takato takes the sudden change with his customary reaction to surprising new events. He panics, scrambles awkwardly to his feet, and somehow manages to trip over the edge of his chair and fall onto the ground. After a few more seconds of panicking he manages to grab his journal and open it.]

Um, help! Something just happened and I don't know what it is!

[When Alan hears a call for help - especially from a little kid - he's got to answer.]

Are you alright? Where are you?

I'm in the lobby. And I don't think I'm hurt? But something really strange just happened. I feel weird.

[With the Castle, that could mean anything.]

I'll be right down.

[And lo and behold, Alan makes it downstairs to the lobby about 5 minutes later.]

[He'll find a distressed boy trying to watch the pattern of red lines passing over his skin.]

Hey, I remember you - from the reunion. ...Takato, right?

[He notices the lines immediately.]

Those must be what you were talking about. I think I'd remember those.

[He jerks his head up and nods.]

Yeah... Takato Matsuda. These just appeared a couple of minutes ago. There was one time before that this happened. [He pauses, and then bursts out in worry.] But this shouldn't be possible here!

It looks like a grid frame for 3-D modeling.

...This happened before? [This might make their family structure make a little more sense...]

When I evolved with Guilmon in the real world. I remember something like this. Because I wasn't data there, but we still had to become data to fight.

[...]

What?

[Welcome to the world of Digimon, Alan.]

[Takato simply blinks at him, not really aware that he'd said anything strange.]

What did it look like? Did it look like it was probably dangerous?

I don't know if it's dangerous? [Takato was caught up in watching the lines of light passing over his skin.]

Does it look like it might be though?

I don't know? Maybe? It isn't hurting me, but it looks really strange.

Like lines made out of light.

... Weird. Try poking them with something?

[This sounds suspiciously like something from the Grid.

And there'd have been no way to tell this before, during the "family reunion", because even programs were humanized, but...]

Takato, are you a program?

No? At least I don't think I am? I mean, I sort of... evolved with Guilmon and became one once. If you think of digimon as programs I guess you could say that.

[He shrugs helplessly.]

I'm a Tamer.

I think that might hurt? Its like they're just on top of my skin.

Wait... it's on you?

Mmm, I think its all over me.

Can you scrub it off maybe?

I don't think its on my skin like that? I mean, it looks like light.

Oh yeah... I guess you can't really scrub off light, can you?

I don't think so? And its moving too.

I don't know much about light... but I have a friend who probably does. I can try asking her?

I will see if I can find her, but it's been awhile since I last saw her around.

[ Mostly because she's a cat right now... ]

[Well, if it happened once before...] If it's not harmful, and happened suddenly like this...my first thought is that it's a loss. But...you're gonna have to explain all that from the top. [These terms went right over Alan's head. Maybe Rinzler can be of some help, too...]

I'm not really sure how to explain it. Jen was always a lot better at that kind of thing. I just did it, I didn't really understand why it worked.

No problem! I am just sorry I don't actually know more about it and can't really help.

I'm gonna need you to start from the top. Tamer? Digimon?

Digimon... [He hesitates.] I think you could say that they are like living creatures made out of data. But they're just as real as humans are. The digimon were started as an artificial intelligence experiment by a group called the monster makers. But when the project closed a long time ago the digimon escaped into the network and they started evolving by themselves.

A Tamer is someone who is partnered with a digimon. Each of us, we all chose our partners and our partners chose us. And the digignomes granted our wish to be partners by giving us D-Arcs.

Mr. Shibumi told me once that the D-Arc was created to allow better communication between humans and digimon. But that the way we use it isn't like anything he ever thought of.

[Alan listens attentively, trying to reconcile the information with what he knows of the Grid and its programs to make it easier to handle and understand. He's quiet as he absorbs what he's just been told, processing just a bit at a time.]

You mean the way you use it to...evolve with your digimon partner.

This sounds a little similar to my own world. We haven't got digimon or tamers, but there're sentient programs.

Like the digignomes?

I'm not sure. Most were created for a specific purpose, like security or data pushing. Others make their own purpose.

Most people don't know they exist.

That sounds a lot like digimon. I mean, none of them were created for a specific purpose. That's what the D-Reaper and the Digi-entelechie were. Digmon just are.

[He's gonna hafta see what he can find out about these digimon things; the library might have something he can take notes from.

In any case, it's good to hear that not all digimon are stifled like the Grid under CLU's rule.]

Why is that?

I like to compare the different ways technology has developed across the worlds. Mostly through equivalences between my world's programs and other worlds' digital entities and information. Digimon, in your case.

Are there a lot of worlds with digital worlds?

If there are, most of them haven't ended up here. But if we've got them, there's no doubt that there must be more.
