[ The journal opens to the excited barking of a puppy and John's laughter and more barking. Guess what they got for Christmas? If you guessed a puppy you'd be absolutely correct, now just let that image sit with you for a moment. Sherlock Holmes and John Watson, owning a puppy. A puppy in the flat.

You're not wrong in thinking this is going to end in disaster. ]

Hey! [ John springs up from his armchair as the puppy speeds into the kitchen after something, a scent properly the little bloodhound has been smelling practically everything in the flat for the last few days. ]

Sherlock, we're going to have to name him sometime. We can't keep calling him "hey" or "dog", it's not right.

[ There is some more barking and John quickly moves into the kitchen to scoop up the said puppy up. ]

Alright you, lets keep you out of there for a while, last thing we want is you eating one of Sherlock's experiments on accident.

[Sherlock is lying belly-down on the sofa, peering suspiciously over the arm of it into the kitchen.

If that creature messes with his experiments heads are going to roll.]

"Dog" is practical, comprehensive, and gets its attention well enough. Why should it need anything else?

Because I don't want to keep calling him dog. [ As said thing tries to lick his face, John is certainly loved by the cute little thing. ]

[Sherlock shifts, squints thoughtfully into space.]

What about Gladstone?

[workaphilic]

[He wrinkles his nose.]

It's acceptable, I suppose.

[confidente]

It's better than dog.

[ He looks down at the dog, giving the animal a grin. ]

What do you think? Gladstone? [ Bark, bark. ] I think he likes it.

It's settled then.

[workaphilic]

Fantastic. [He rolls over, sulkily.] Maybe now we can teach it to be quiet.

[confidente]

He's still a puppy. [ He gives the new named Gladstone a scratch behind the ears. ] Give him time.

[workaphilic]

[He sniffs disdainfully.]

I'm holding you responsible for any damage it causes.

[confidente]

[ Eye roll. ]

Fine. You're too busy to try and train him anyway.

[ Translation: You're sure as hell not going to train him. ]

Of course I am.
