[ Frodo arrives rolling and tumbling across the floor.

There was a great shadow over him then, something with a terrible stench and legs too numerous to count. And now, light. He shields himself from the brightness and scoots back until he bumps against the wall, then scrambles to find shelter behind a couch. It hurts his eyes. The air is suddenly too clear, everything too clean. He fears it is a trick.

He speaks in a hush, afraid to alert the enemies but more afraid of being alone. ]

Sam? Where are you, Sam?

[ Frodo doesn't believe the enemy is capable of mimicking compassion, the way Legolas shows him now. His grip loosens and he remembers to cover it with his collar. ]

Yes. But, Sam-- we were pursued. I left him behind. We must find him!

[He would agree, certain that such patience was lost on any enemy they had.]

If he is here, we will find him. The swiftest way would be to speak over the journals.

[This isn't the elfs first concern though, Frodo's health was. If any other hobbits were here, there was no reason for anyone to bother them. Especially not anyone from their world that he'd seen here so far.]

I'm sure he is safe, wherever he is.

[And now he offers his hand to Frodo, still not moving closer in case the Hobbit remained wary.]

[ He sets his jaw, terribly worried. Whatever it was almost got him and now it must be chasing after Sam.

He reaches to take that offered hand. ]

Let us find him first.

[His smile grows a bit and he lightly squeezes Frodo's hand in reassurance before standing. The elf did not think Sam to be there but there was no harm in asking.]

There must be a journal nearby then, for your use. Unless you would prefer to use mine?

[Undoubtedly there would be questions about them to follow but he would wait.]

Yours, if it would be quicker.

[ Before Sam gets gobbled up by whatever it was. Frodo straightens up and follows. ]

[A nod from Legolas and from the book he was carrying, the draws out his journal and offers it to Frodo.]

You need only speak into it. You may also write but speaking would be far more swift in finding Sam.

[ Frodo takes the book and flips to an empty page. ]

Speak into it?

That's right, simply speak. It's a magic beyond my ken but it works and it likely is letting other journal owners hear us even now.

[ Legolas, are you pulling his leg? He really isn't sure, the elf can be quite the imp when it came to the dwarf. ]

Hu...llo?

[But you aren't Gimli or any other dwarf, Frodo. It's not as fun to tease you. Fun but not as much fun.]

It's that simple. Anyone that hears you will answer, if they wish to.

[ That's only because you haven't tried, Legolas. Once you go hobbit... Anyway, Frodo gives him a doubting look. Nothing's happened. ]

Will this book speak to me?

[Don't tempt him. He spent a week as a devious little elfling and nobody wants Legolas to be that awful again.]

It will seem so. The voices of the other castle residents will come through the pages. Others may choose to write in reply to you, those will appear on the page. I fear I've brought nothing to write with though.

[ As long as he's playing on his side, Frodo doesn't mind the mischief :'] He flips through a few of the pages then looks back at Legolas. ]

Sam would have spoken to me if he is here. [ He considers. ] I will take time to read this.

[Legolas wouldn't never be on any side but Frodo's. He's rather fond of that particular hobbit.]

He would have, yes. I'm certain that he's alright though, you both made it through the war safely.

[Okay, there were cuts and bruises, hurt feelings, lots of crying and so on but they were alive.]

[ Now that would see him fight back tears of joy, though now Frodo just seems unsure and trying not to show it. ]

We returned from the Quest? But it is not yet completed. [ He doesn't get this different timelines thing. ]

[He can't blame poor Frodo for being unsure. His quest is long and hard.]

In your eyes, it is yet uncompleted. In mine, it ended a century ago. It is the way that this castle works.

[ For some weeks then Frodo had grown to come to terms with the likelihood that he won't live to see the Shire saved, and that's if he succeeds in his mission at all. Either way, he's resigned to going through with it until the very end without hope for return.

It's too much to take in. ]

Is that for certain? That I will definitely complete this task?

It is, yes. There are others here who have not yet lived to see it but I have. And I would not lie to you of this.

[He wouldn't lie to Frodo at all but that was beside the point. This was too serious a subject to make a light matter out of.]

[ The news gives him much hope but then he is afraid of too much, lest it makes him too careless. Frodo swallows heavily. ]

I believe you. You wouldn't lie. Only it is difficult for me to see beyond the dark road still before me.

[ He isn't even sure there is any good end for him to look forward to. ]

I understand. For now, simply take comfort that you are safe here and you can rest well. I will pledge myself and my bow to you once more.

[ Frodo frowns. ]

I will not hold you to your vow though I would accept your help, freely given.

Then you will have it.

[Urge to hug Hobbit rising.]

[ Frodo tries a smile, somewhat unused to it, and moves in for a hug! Pardon the smell, Legolas. ]

[Oh blegh, that is a smell. He can handle it though and wraps his arms around the halfling. There were worse smells during the quest, like burning orc flesh.]

[ Orcs, yes, he probably smells like a little orc by now, so he knows to pull back after a moment. ]

I thought I would never see you again or Aragorn or any of the others.
