[Maybe it's all the weird shit that keeps happening that drives Spike to do something completely normal, because today he's outside walking a dog. (The one he couldn't get rid of even after he disappeared for a few days.) Either that, or the dog wouldn't leave him alone until he got out of his room.

Judging from his face, he isn't enjoying it as much as Ein is. Just keeps his eyes forward and walks like a zombie in a puffy coat through town.]

[Later -- Spike can be found in the castle lobby, trying to sleep on a couch while a dog is nearby, busy working to get his journal open. It's only when he starts barking at it that Spike looks over to see what he's doing.]

Let me know if you get to the bottom of it. [When Ein lifts his head up in response, he smiles slightly. Sometimes it's almost like he understands.] Or use it as a chew toy. You'll get better use out of that thing than I do.

[That thought amuses him as he closes his eyes and rolls back over to nap, completely missing the soft whine coming from his roommate. The exciting life of a cowboy.]

[he kneels down to oblige, then fishes in his pocket until he finds the packet of homemade jerky he bribes Crowley's cats with]. I've never heard of them. .... You mind if people feed him?

[You'd think it was the biggest insult to be assumed the dog's owner. It was fine to have him around with Jet and the kid were there to do this stuff, but now... it's kind of pathetic to be the one taking him on walks like he has nothing better to do.]

[Ein doesn't look like he minds the attitude at all though, all too interested in the treats Gale is taking out. (He's used to it anyway.)]

[wow, someone's having a crap day. as he kneels down to feed the corgi, he'll glance up with a smile] I'm Gale. Nice to meet you.

[Small animals make him moody; everyone has their triggers.]

Spike. [Such a conversationalist too. After inhaling the jerky, Ein seems to take that as a cue to bark in his direction, like he's waiting for his introduction. -- But Spike doesn't pick up on that as easily as Ed might have. He just stands there waiting for Ein to finish making friends.]

If I'm bothering you .... [he frowns. it's pretty easy to tell the guy doesn't want to talk to him, and he's trying not to take it personally]

[He could follow that assumption and walk away at this point, but that would look like he cares too much about trivial things like annoying pets. Which of course he's above.]

I'm just glad he's making friends. [Sure, that sounds good.]

Did you just get him, then? [huh. maybe he's just not much of a conversationalist... and Gale can live with that. he's had plenty of friends who weren't big on talk.]

[This isn't the kind of conversation he's used to, which gives cause to wonder why he's actively attempting not to be a jerk here.]

Did you want one? [Because he already offered Ein up to the journal once, guy.]

No, I - well, we've already got a lot of animals running around the house I'm living in. And most of them are cats.

[Huh. Funny how normal that sounds.]

Too bad. I'm sure he'd rather live in town.

[he scratches the ruff of fur under Ein's chin, addressing the dog now:]. It isn't so bad up there, you know. You can get whatever you want, and there are plenty of people to play with. Let him stay up there, don't give him too hard a time.

[He's talking to the dog... Ein, you're walking yourself from now on.]

I wouldn't go that far.

[hey, the dog's more outgoing than his owner. besides, it's pretty normal for people to talk to their pets where he's from]

Would you move into town if you had the chance?

[The dog seems to understand. It's hard making up for the both of them.]

You have a place to rent?

I don't personally, no. I'm living in a house with my girlfriend and her family. [he loves how easily that comes to him - her family. not just her friends. he smiles]

But she said it was really easy for her to get the house, anyway. I can get some more information from her, if you really do want to move. It's nice, you only have to deal with random things happening to people, most of the time. The town itself doesn't change as much as the castle does.

[That might be the first thing he's said that Spike totally listened to. A whole family from the castle...]

You've really settled in.

[he smiles, in the way of someone who still can't quite believe what's happening] Yeah, I -- I got really lucky, meeting her when I did. A lot's happened ... I've almost been here a year. But it doesn't feel like it. Not with these guys - every day's definitely something different.

[he chuckles softly] It might help a little that most of them are pretty crazy.

[He should feel happy for him, but the more you have, the more you have to lose. But he does manage to keep that to himself. It's none of his business..]

Too bad about the cats, then.

[he chuckles, softly] Tell you what. If I find a place nearby that's looking for renters, I'll let you know? I wouldn't mind having a neighbor that wasn't ...

[he gestures ambivalently to the rest of the town in a way that's somehow supposed to convey "slightly soulless and creepy"]

[Polite guy. Spike isn't sure why he's so willing to be neighbors when he hasn't exactly been Mr. Personality, but maybe that's what he's looking for.]

Sure. I'll be around.

[because everyone should have a place they can call home and mean it, no matter who they are, here. that's why. he smiles a little]

Good deal. ... I'm Gale.

[He wouldn't call it that even if he did; some people have trouble with that concept. But he nods anyway.]

I'll toss you a filter if I hear anything good. That is, if you check the journals?

[he says it like he wouldn't be offended if Spike didn't - like he'd understand]

I'll keep an eye out.

[Said like he wishes he could say he doesn't. Maybe someday he'll break the habit.]
