[It was bound to happen sooner or later. He knew that. He'd always known that - it's what this place does. How many people--how many hundreds of people--had come here a day, a month, a year, and then left again without warning? How many dozens of people had he, personally, cared about and then had taken from him?
Nothing like this, though. Never like this.
He'd awakened in his own room, the first sign that something was wrong. He hadn't been here except to pick up the occasional supplies ever since he'd moved in with Carolina. His initial feeling of dread is compounded when he finds only her dogtags and lighter on the nightstand next to him.
He doesn't want to believe it, at first, but of course when he runs up to her room in a blind panic, it's empty and the nameplate is blank. Of course it is. Why should it be otherwise? When has this place ever managed to hold on to anyone he cared about?
It's about an hour later when he finally writes into the journal, not trusting his voice.]
Carolina's gone.
[Friends]
I'm going to be away from the castle for a while. Don't bother coming after me.
[/Friends]
[If anyone is quick enough they'll be able to find him at Kat's hangar, outfitting the Warthog for a week or more's travel. The Dead Zone's not really an option, not with Delta, but damned if he's going to stay any closer to the castle than he has to.]

Psst... hey, Delta. You here?
[He's pretty sure that the AI doesn't have to sleep (or shutdown or whatever)either.]
no subject
Hello, Church. How may I be of assistance?
no subject
[It takes a second for Church to remember that apparently he's been here before. So even if he's never met Delta before, Delta has probably met him. Which is pretty fuckin' weird.]
So, how bad is it?
no subject
He is taking it extremely poorly. However, I believe he will recover given time.
no subject
[He feels surprisingly better knowing that Delta thinks York will be ok. I mean who would know better right?]
I just... I've been where he is now. It feels like the end of the world.
He's got to know that even if it seems like everyone is just going to shit on your heart and leave, you can't let yourself push everyone else away and not let new people in.
Otherwise, you just end up a lonely, bitter asshole for the rest of your life.
[Why yes, when it comes to advice... Church is the biggest damn hypocrite you'll ever meet.]
no subject
He has expressed a similar sentiment in the past, especially when consoling others who have lost loved ones to the machinations of the castle. I believe he will eventually take his own advice.
[Still, he's not denying that York feels exactly that bad right now. It's hard when you lose someone you love, especially when you have no control over the matter.]
Do not be overly concerned. I will not allow him to drink himself into a coma, which may cause liver damage.
no subject
Well, good. I'd hate to have to bring a rescue party all the way out here to save his stupid depressed ass.
If he's not getting any better in a couple days let me know and I'll give him the "life sucks so quit your bitching" speech.
[and now if you'll excuse him, the lonely bitter asshole has to go tell himself he only came out here because he owed York one... not because he gives a shit or anything.
If Delta thought his being out here would help York in any way, he would have mentioned it. He'll give the guy some privacy.]
no subject
That may be necessary. He went into seclusion for several weeks when the previous version of Agent Washington departed without warning.
In either scenario, your effort is appreciated. We would do the same for you.
no subject
I'll be back in a few days to check on him. Can't let him stay gone so long everyone starts worrying about him.
[He waves off Delta's "we would do the same"]
Meh... Thanks, but I doubt that'll ever be necessary.
no subject
Understood. We will likely changed locations by then; however, I will be glad to provide you with updated coordinates.
[One thing York gets when he's like this is restless.]
no subject
Sounds good. Catch you in a few days.
With any luck I'll have my body back by then.
no subject
Church. What has happened to your body?
no subject
Uh... Look, It's not a big deal. I just kind of got... eaten.
[trying to make that sound as nonchalant as possible. Like it's totally not a problem.]
I should have a guy coming to fix it up by the time I get back to the castle.
no subject
[This is Delta's disapproving tone.]
Why did you allow this to happen?
no subject
I didn't fucking allow it to happen Delta!
[This is Church's irate tone]
You know this may come as a surprise to you, but I'm not a Freelancer. I didn't get any fancy super-soldier training and I certainly don't have an AI buddy to help me run any special equipment.
[Exasperated sigh]
Look, just worry about York ok.
He doesn't need to know about this, he's got enough shit on his plate.
no subject
Perhaps you simply lack training. For example, you were not aware you had a motion tracker. There may be other abilities you possess you are unfamiliar with.
[Okay, he knows for a fact this is true. But still, it should give him a good indication of whether or not Church is willing at this point to pursue his AI abilities.]
I will not tell him before you do. He is concerned with his own well-being at this point.
no subject
[That made sense. Who knows what else they hadn't told them about. Worst run army ever. It was almost like they were trying to see what would happen if you gave a bunch of idiots some equipment and like zero training on how to really use it.]
Anyway, I'm going to take off. I'll see you in a few days.
no subject
In the meantime, I do wish you good luck. Simply let me know when you wish to visit again. It has been a pleasure.
[And he means it. He wouldn't have expected Church to care enough to come out here and track them, after all. It warms his little glowing green heart.]
no subject
[He doesn't care. He just came out here because he owes York one. Just look at all these fucks he couldn't give. Stupid emo Freelancer. ...yada yada yada...]
no subject
[Of course. Heaven forbid anyone here get attached to anyone else.]
