paradisa | 23- Goodbye

[Martel was wandering down to Yuan's room that afternoon, since she hadn't actually heard from him in a few days. He had a tendency to fall off the map, and then she would drag him out of his room. Maybe she could take him to that cafe in the city that she always seemed to frequent with people. First Zack and now Reborn. May as well take Yuan there, too.

Until she arrived at his door and saw the empty nameplate. For a moment she couldn't believe it, couldn't believe that she had come to the right room. But she walked up and down the hall, and always came back to that room with the empty nameplate.

She bit her lip, and could feel tears welling up in her eyes. This could not be happening, they were going to get married, she had bought them new engagement rings for Christmas... She and Ino had gone out and picked out the most beautiful wedding dress, and it was sitting in her closet right now. She would probably never wear it.

There would be no more teasing him, no more gentle kisses, no more hearing his voice or even seeing him. She was dead in Aselia. If he never came back, if she went home.... She would never see him again. Martel knew that their time was uncertain, even Yuan knew, but he had been here for so long... She had almost believed they could make it work. She had almost believed that they could get married and be happy.

She wiped at the tears that were on her cheeks, the ones that she hadn't wanted to fall, but they were anyway. She couldn't stay here and stare at that empty nameplate. She had to go somewhere, anywhere else. Somewhere where she could cry in peace, and that definitely wasn't the castle.

So she turned and ran back towards the stairs, only thinking of getting out of the castle and away.]

[She ended up at that self same cafe, having calmed down a fair bit on the way here and as she walked through the city. Nobody really knew to find her here, and that was good enough for her while she tried to pull herself back together. She got a small cup of calming herbal tea, sipping at it while she steadied her voice and opened her journal to make the announcement.]

I'm sorry to say, but... Yuan Ka-Fai has gone home.

[And there's that. She closes her journal and sniffs, wiping at her eyes, and sipping at her tea. She'll check it later, when she doesn't feel like she was going to burst into tears again at any time.]

[And that's totally fine by him, really. He doesn't do emotions so well.

So he just nods at that and then tugs on his fedora slightly. Welp.]

He was an idiot. [...That's a yes.]

[A gentle sigh as she shakes her head.] Reborn... You didn't manage to injure one another, did you?

[If they had, she would have seen them in the clinic. Maybe. People don't seem to like to go to the clinic these days.]

[Look she's even more of a reason to avoid the clinic if he's injured in a fight with Colonello...] No, he isn't able to and I'd rather not have Lal after me if he was injured and she arrived.

[She would just have to hunt him down, then.]

Lal...? [Who was Lal? Another Arcobaleno?]

[He takes a sip of his espresso before reaching up to take Leon off of his hat and putting him on the table.] Colonello's teacher when he was a part of the COMSUBIN, the Italian special forces. She's an Arcobaleno. [Or at least good as, but that's a story for another time.]

[She nods, sipping at her tea and finally pulling the dessert over to her to start eating it.] Well, at least no one got hurt. I would hate to have to patch you two up at the clinic. I'm not entirely good at bullet wounds. Arrows, yes. Bullets... not so much.

[He doesn't smile but the way he tugs his hat down as she pulls the dessert over is just as much a sign that he's glad she's eating it. And then that tug becomes a slightly well nervous one.] With what Coloello uses, it would be more like reattaching limbs if he wounded someone.

[...that does't make it better Reborn.]

...Which I would also have some problems doing. [She was one of the greatest healers of her time, but even she has her limits.] Do me a favor, for my own piece of mind, and neither of you get hurt?

[Just casually sipping his espresso. For her well, okay fine. He'll find a way around that.] Of course, Martel.

[And then he tilts his head slightly to look at her.] With that strength, his rifle is even louder than my pistol. [Just a warning.]

[She nods.] I understand. I'll be careful.

And thank you, for the dessert. [A smile.] It's absolutely delicious.

[He nods back at that.] I thought you may appreciate a taste of Italy, after our talks before.

[He may not pay attention to his surroundings but he knows about food.]

It is delicious. Something like this... I wouldn't even get it on Aselia. Things like these... They're for the rich nobles of Tethe'alla. [So it's a novelty.]

[Which means he'll just go digging around old Italian recipes for her then, because wow.] Then I should show you some other meals from that part of Earth.

[It's a statement, not a question.]

Would you? [A delighted laugh.] That's always something that fascinates me here. The kitchen and all the food. And running water out of a faucet. It's a far cry from getting water out of muddy puddles and streams and hoping it's safe to drink after you boil it.

[...Yeah.]

[...Oh that's it Martel you're getting a lesson Reborn style...maybe. Eventually. Sort of.] And electricity then?

Well, we have magitechnology that runs off of Lightening mana. But that's mostly war machines. If there are anything like indoor lights anywhere, they're in high-tech laboratories or in noble's homes.

[Rubbing his chin at that now, because that is interesting and then, because he can't help it and the man isn't around to say anything...] Verde would go mad in your world.

Verde? [Martel is amused, because she is hearing so many things about his life tonight.] Another Arcobaleno that likes...technology?

[Bits and pieces and mostly what Tsuna knows, but hey if it distracts her from being sad...] A scientist, the greatest genius in the world. He'd find more interest in mana and then go mad for lack of ways to study it.

[A headtilt.] Well, mana is everywhere in my world. It's the source of all life, and every living creature contains mana. Even the air has mana within it.

It used to be in plentiful supply, but... Not anymore. [The war has used it all, and the tree is dying-dead, now.]

[And a tug on his fedora, more in thought then not.] Ah. That would be of great interest to him, as he studies anything and not always for the best intentions. [Rarely ever really...] Such power would be of great interest to him, out of us all he's embraced his time as an Arcobaleno in order to study more.

[A pause at that.] Then he would have to be careful. Mana in visible form is highly dangerous and explosive. That is why they weaponize it for the war. [Whatever he could do, they had already done and more.]

[And well the he'd keep trying, Verde was nothing if not persistent.] Caution is not something Verde does. Tsuna can tell you that as much as I can.

[...Oh. One of those types. Sorry, they have more than enough of those researchers, thanks.] ...well, it's a good thing he's not here or there, isn't it? Mana is not a toy or something you should examine too closely.

[Yup one of those types. Damn, he thought he could pass Verde off on some other world really...] It is, I worry what he would do with the castle and if his own curse was toyed with while here.

[Three Arcobaleno in both their forms could prove well, a problem.]
