I very nearly let this slip my mind, with the lack of reminders around here, but a conversation with someone tripped my memory.

Perhaps a touch - but of all the days in the year, I think one's birthday is the best excuse for vanity.

There are probably almost as many new year traditions as there are cultures - and nearly as many dates as that. Some traditionally place it on one of the solstices, or one of the equinoxes, and others, at the start of various seasons. January 1st is largely a modern convention.
