Dictated; Open to Action for Conan's room

 [Today was the Fourth of May.  It was his birthday.  

But Conan was in no mood to celebrate.

He should have been turning twenty today. He should have been in university by now.  He should have been starting his life as an adult.

But even after three years, Conan still didn't look a day over seven.  He still hadn't made any progress towards finding a cure or stopping the Black Organization.  

He was beginning to lose hope.

So instead of going out into the castle today, and meeting any of the people who might know of his birthday, Conan had chosen to lock himself in his room with nothing but his Holmes novels. After hours of reading alone, he finally chooses to open up his journal.]

The Fourth of May, huh. Reichenbach Falls.

[Conan is silent for a long moment.]

I wonder how long it was that Arthur Conan Doyle truly intended to leave the 'Adventure of the Final Problem' as the last Holmes story.

[There is a pop! from behind him, and suddenly Dairine is there. Yup, she didn't even bother with the door this time. She has a deep frown on her face.]

Dude, are you trying to make people worried about you?

[He doesn't react.]

Go away, Dairine.

[She leans forward, resting her arms on his head.]

You know that doesn't work, Sherlock.

[He lets out an outraged yelp, and tries to squirm away from her.]

Will you just quit it? I don't need anyone to worry about me.

[He manages to get away, but not before she ruffles up his hair a bit, something she still tries to do even knowing his true age. Sighing, she flops down to sit on his bed.]

One of these days, you'll figure out that that's not how friendship works.

[Kate has been in the castle for over a month now - and she isn't happy about it. Regardless, she is doing the best that she could to get by, to find any answers she can. But she is also curious about what things had been like when she had been here before and hadn't remembered, and the people who knew her aare a constant curiosity to her.

So when she hadn't seen much of Conan and then the dictation went through the journal, she decides to swing by his room and check on him. Kate is lost when it came to kids; it wasn't as bad as dealing with babies but not as easy for her as dealing with teenagers like Alexis had been. Conan had given her a completely different vibe when they'd spoken, however, as if she wasn't talking to a child, and she is certainly curious about their previous partnership.

Which is how she eventually finds herself outside of his room, knocking quietly on the door and waiting to see if he would even answer.]

[Conan sighs in irritation. He'd just gotten to a good part in his reread of his favorite Holmes anthology. But his curiosity wouldn't let him leave the door unanswered. He makes his way over to the door, and opens it by jumping up high enough to hang onto the doorknob and turn it.

Even opening doors was complicated when you were three feet tall.]

[Kate pokes her head through when the door opens, looking down at him and offering him a smile.]

Hey. You doin' all right?

I'm doing okay!

[Conan gives her a false smile. Objectively, he knew that how he'd been doing recently couldn't be described as okay. But that was hardly something he intended to talk about.]

[Kate stands at the door, feeling a little awkward now. She'd kind of been vouching on that whole, they-knew-each-other-before connection to get him to open up but... The kid was too smart for that, she guessed.]

Can, uh... Can I come in?

It's a lot harder to hide these sort of things from a pony with quasi-pecognitive abilities. Cheese doesn't even bother knocking, instead barging in with a trail of streamers and a cacophony of party blowers, appearing from seemingly nowhere. The pony bounds happily in front of him.]

HAPPY SOMETHING!! My Cheesy Sense was a tingling, telling me a celebration was happening here for you, and boy am I glad it did, because you've got nothing going on here. So what is it? Paraversary? Birthday? Cute-ceanera?Do humans even have those? I ddon't think you get cutie marks, but I could be wrong.

[Conan's first reaction is to frantically look around the room for an escape route.

There wasn't one. The streamers and party balloons were between him and the door.

Conan scowls unhappily. He really did not want to deal with this right now.]

Well, your cheesy sense was wrong. There is absolutely nothing to celebrate here.

Nope, sorry, my Cheesy Sense is never, ever wrong. [He starts rummaging around Conan's room, rifling through books and the like, as if they hold some sort of clue.] So, come on, spill the beans, what's the celebration?

There is no celebration! And stop that! I just finished organizing all my books.

But there is, my Cheesy Sense wouldn't go off for nothing.

[He walks over to Conan, squinting. ]

Why don't you want to celebrate anything? Surely a bit of fun is just what you need right now.

Perhaps he truly was done with Mr Holmes? It's not unknown for famous figures to discard their creations purely because they have no more use for them.

I was thinking about your Moriarty when I wrote this, XD

When he wrote it, he truly intended for this story to be the end of Holmes. It was the response of the fans that persuaded him to change his mind.

Oof ... popularity can be such a burden to bare.

Perhaps Mr Doyle should have been grateful he'd didn't live in the age of twitter or facebook. The top two tools of the relentless fanboys to help them get what they want.
