Let's All Get Prepared [ voice + action ]

Good day my fellow residents.

As most of you know, there has been a planned expedition to inspect the meteor, and we will all be leaving soon - well, those of us wanting to go. I know for some this is their first time going, and so I thought I might offer myself as a resource. I know some of you may not have experience either on expeditions or 'roughing it' as they might say, but I am here to answer questions and offer advice on what to pack and bring with you. This includes those who intend to walk and those who intend to bring animals.

If you are already packed and want to do a double check, remember, there is no guarantee this expedition will be a quiet one, and no guarantee of what we will meet. Every expedition has brought new revelations. As cliche as it sounds 'expect the unexpected' is as good a warning as any.

If you would like specific advice, just contact me and for those who do not know me - I am Ashura. I will also be down in the kitchen later if you want an on hands demonstration.

He set out some of the basics he had learned over the years, and even included some clothing to bring as well. He intended to be thorough. A well prepared group would be more capable of meeting any threat than one that fumbled about, after all. ]

Yes, there are some in the barn, though I am unclear exactly whom they belong to. You could pick one and ask if anyone takes ownership, and if not, I see no reason why ou could not take it with us.

Quite welcome. We have plenty, as I said, but I am not sure all the owners are still present. I know that mine, Duke's beast, and Vanyel's white mare are all taken.

Okay. There any way to tell which ones've been spoken for?

Unfortunately, no, not to my knowledge. I would say read the name on the stall and ask over the journal. Truthfully, I think most are free.

Okay. Maybe I'll just take a mule instead. They got any of those?

If you are curious come, but I warn you, be prepared for a potential fight and other threats.

That's what I'm a little worried about. I didn't fight anything else other than Shadows before this.

Well, at least you have some fighting experience. I could be wrong, and it could be quiet and merely long and tedious. But I suppose I am also a pessimist when it comes to such things.

I've packed up the stuff you'd typically take on a camping trip or a hike or whatever. Will...I be able to ride Flygon out in the Dead Zone?

Perhaps. Animals are always an issue in the Dead Zone, because their abilities could be either physical or magical and depending on which will determine if said skill is usable.

And a camping trip is the right way to think on it, just a long one, and I would pack first aid supplies as well.

Well, Flygon's got the look of a dragon. He's one of those pokemon things, and I only just started reading about them a few days ago, so I don't know much about what he can do yet.

Okay, I'll do that. I've gotta be careful, because out in the Dead Zone I won't be as strong as I can make myself here, so I won't be able to carry as much. I still wanna help though, and especially what we've all been through the last week, I think we all need to know more about what's going on in this place.

I agree. I would think you could keep the idea of being able to fly, but I make no guarantees on that, so be prepared to walk or try and bring yourself an alternative mode of transportation like a horse.

We will probably not be in the Dead Zone the entire time, but yes, be prepared to spend a day without your normal powers.

Flygon can walk on all fours, too, so I could either ride him, or use him to carry supplies and stuff, as long as he's okay with it. If he can't go out there, I can always ride a horse, too.

I can live with that. I've actually had lessons in surviving without my powers, though I never thought I'd ever have to use them, heh.

Probably a good thing. We need to be cautious in the Dead Zone. Eventually, you would come back to life if you were here in Paradisa, but in the Dead Zone, that rule does not apply as well. If you die there, you die for good.

Good. I do not think anything untoward will happen, but it never hurts to be cautious.

This is my first expedition, so to be honest, I'm not sure where to start. Though, just one thing, first - where do we get supplies? Do we just wish them up from the castle, or do we have to get them from somewhere else? I mean, it seems like you can get just about anything you need here, but... well, saying the castle's been temperamental lately is an understatement.

You could wish them up if you like, but some of the shops in town will sell the items to if you wish to earn them that way. Both are acceptable, it merely depends on if you have money or if you do not mind incurring the price that will come later.

[Groans. She doesn't like the idea of owing the castle, but it's not like she has a choice, either. Even if she had any money, she wouldn't have enough to pay for even a fraction of what she needed]

As much as I like the townsfolk, I'm pretty much stuck with the charity and goodwill of Fort Paradisa for now. But, what do you mean by "price"? I mean, what does the castle expect out of us, exactly?

That is a question no one can really answer, I am afraid. It is not as if the Castle explains its motives to us.

As for price, I mean a small loss, one you might pay next week or in a month or two months. Eventually, though, you pay when the tab is called.

So, it can't be any worse than what we lost when we came here... but it's not permanent, is it? Even if it's a little thing, well, little things can build up to pretty big things if you let them go long enough.

No, not permanent. They usually last a week, though some last longer. It merely depends, I suppose, on what you have been wishing for lately and what the Castle feels is just repayment.

...that's not quite as bad as I expected. I guess I'll just have to deal with that later, though. [Moving along - it won't help to dwell on that now] Anyway, you said you were giving "hands-on demonstrations", right? What kind of stuff are you going to show people?

How to pack your pack, what you should be bringing, what you can bring but don't necessarily need to. Not everyone is used to this sort of travel, after all. And since we cannot rely on magic packs once we reach the Dead Zone, it is necessary to take normal ones.

So, pretty much the basics, then. I might need some help with the pack later, if you don't mind, but is it alright if I just ask you some questions here, first? Mostly I'm just trying to figure out how much to bring. I mean, I don't want to bring too much, but I also don't want to mooch off people halfway through the trip, either.

Yes, I understand.

We should have a supply wagon and some pack beasts, so if you figure out who is bringing those, you could potentially store more. You will want something to sleep on, so a light sleeping kit, another shirt and part of pants to change into - you can wash the other pair when and if we find a river or other water source. It would be good to have your own water source and some dried meats and fruits. Some people bring things to keep them occupied at night, but make sure they are light and do not take up much room. Socks for your shoes and or boots.

It is really a matter of practicality when you think on it.

Would you find use for a scout?

I am sure we would. Certainly anyone with experience in long travel is welcome.

I can be quiet, and I'm small. I can help with scouting.

Then you would be perfect. So long as you do not mind walking quite a bit, unless you have a mount.

I enjoy walking. I found a pony but I think just a stick will serve me just as well.

Fair enough. I suppose it makes me sound weak that I prefer the mount to the walking.

Not at all! I don't get much walking done when I'm home then my stomach gets rather fat.

I have never had that problem, and I suppose I should be thankful for it.
