[He doesn't, really. Sherlock gives James a long look... and then shrugs, turning to the pack sitting on the ground next to him.]

Don't get him any more riled up than he already is.

[That's not a 'no,' at least. And Gladstone seems super amenable to pettings.]

He's riled up?

[ James sounds pretty skeptical of that as he kneels down in front of the dog, holding out his hand to let him sniff before moving to pet him. This has to be the best behaved dog he's ever come across, personally.

He's counting Sirius in that. ]

'Wound up' might be a better way to put it. [Sherlock pulls a small moleskin notebook out of his pack and flips lazily through it.] He's not used to this much stimulation. He's well-behaved now, but it'll only take something small to set him running. Centimeters and kilometers, or something.

[An inch and a mile, he means.]

[ James isn't sure he's heard either saying, but definitely not one that's "centimeters and kilometers". Giving Sherlock a sidelong glance and shaking his head. ]

Of course. He's a dog, he's got to get some running done every day to really feel accomplished.

He gets plenty of exercise, that's not the issue. The issue is that he'll wear himself out if I allow him to sniff all the things he wants to right now.

And god knows no one wants to have to carry him halfway through the trip.

Not if I can help it. Keeping him under control also drastically lowers the chances of him running off, never to be seen again.

A lead ought to do that too.

A lead doesn't give me any more control than I would have otherwise, I still have to hold on to it. Training works better and is lends itself to my actually getting work done.

Well you certainly are strict with him.

Better that than the alternative.

What? Actually holding onto a lead?

I have better things to do than constantly wonder if he's run off yet, especially when I can just train him not to run off at all.

He's a dog, he'll always come back even if he does wander for a moment.

That's not even remotely true.

Of course it is! It's a known fact about dogs.

I won't need it. He'll always be back once he's done whatever business he has elsewhere.
