[ He grinned, rubbing his shoulders and neck. He missed the hounds, at times, the same as he missed the horses. He had grown up with those things, good memories of his childhood. ]

I feel like this is a re-hash of our last conversation.

Think what you want. I don't expect my dog to go above and beyond, I expect him to do exactly what he's been trained to do. Anything more would be unreasonable.
