[Dairine wanders through the control room, resisting the urge to run straight to the captain's chair. Instead she looks at the screens for clues to their new location. She stops when she reaches the one about the Gravity Core. As she reads, she looks more and more concerned as her face pales.]

Who the heck would build something like that?!

[Someone walks into the control room, face like a thundercloud. He's obviously not happy to be in space again.]

[Oh joy. Dairine glances over at Barton, glad to see him but kinda wishing he had been put in stasis. She tries to joke, but her voice is all serious from the reality of the situation]

Well, look who woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning.

Not in the mood, Dairine. Let's just figure this crap out and go home.

[Dairine's not in that great of a mood either. Her lack of wizardry makes her nervous, especially after reading what she has. She gestures to a nearby screen.]

It might not be that simple.

We're supposed to be responding to a distress call from another ship, the Event Horizon. But our door is stuck and unless we can get it open, there's not much help we can give them.

I'm August. I heard about the castle taking us to other worlds, but this is the first time I'm experiencing it.

We're definitely on a ship. Earth of origin, going by the read-outs and information on screen. Have you been on a ship before? As in, out in space?

So that's what it means. Makes you wonder: are they asking us for help or warning us to leave?

This ship is here answering a distress signal. "Free yourself from Hell" might be the coded message the other ship managed to send.

I know that. But if I were in distress, I wouldn't be wasting my time making coded messages that could possibly mislead the rescue crew.

Good question. I've never even heard of something like that, and if what this says is true, I'm from over twenty years after this.

It's not all that surprising. Technology progresses differently in other places, depending on the local resources and history.

Yeah, but it sounds like this ship is from Earth, so it's the same origin, but the history is definitely different.

[Dairine turns. Ah, Katniss. It's great to see her friend here. That's one less person to worry about.]

[She doesn't like the sound of that. Gravity wasn't something that should be controlled. Too much power.]

[Evan is checking out instrument panels, not really understanding anything, but he knows that black holes are bad news.]

Someone lookin' to tempt fate, I'm betting. Stuff like this almost never works they want it to. It's no wonder they're sending a distress call. I bet someone turned it on, and it screwed everything up.

It's more than likely. The Event Horizon is a research vessel, afer all. That's sorta part of their job: to take risks and test for errors in order to make progress.

Yeah. Problem is that when you're dealing with high-tier, theoretical science, with black holes and things like that, it's almost doomed to fail without really extensive lab testing. That's how it is in the movies, anyway.

Not everything happens like it does in the movies. If it did, there'd be aliens on Mars. [Oh, if only she knew...]

That said, the odds were definitely against them. Working with black holes or any phase of solar life requires careful precision.
