Twenty Nine Truffula Trees

[It has been some weeks since the Once-ler could play his guitar, the broken ribs he'd received during the Event Horizon mess had made it too painful. But now he's healed enough, he's making the most of it. He's sitting on his clinic bed, his journal open beside him, playing one of the many songs he's learned since arriving here. After he's finished, he lets out a satisfied sort of sigh]

I missed that. [Oh right, open journal] Any requests? I'm out of practise. I can't promise I'll know it, but I'll give it a shot.

[He'd asked for time, and it's what she has given him. He can't fault her for that, so:]

I've still got your birthday gift to play for you, you know.

I don't know about you guys, but I think we should give our car a test run. And a name, probably. But given my love for lisping syllables, someone else should probably do that.

The Castle will not let me - it is my loss. I cannot sing, play instruments, write music, conduct it... nothing. I can listen and appreciate it, but I cannot replicate tunes. I can select them, at least, and say notes, but I cannot actually sing said notes or play them.

[The Once-ler is silent for a moment. He couldn't imagine what he'd do if his music was taken from him. It's such a big part of his life...and yet it's something the castle could so easily take away]

I'm sorry. That must be hard.

It is harder than I like to admit, but I think it would be much harder if it took away my ability to hear it. I draw solace from that, and some have been kind enough to show me how to get it any time I want with these 'stereo' things.

_{[ He had a small pair in his room - very simple, easy for him to command, and he delighted in them. ]}

I guess that's something, yeah.

Those stereo things are pretty handy.

They truly are! We have nothing like them in my world, but they are a marvel. And able to transport music on these tiny bits of shiny plastic or those odd, colorful boxes? I still don't quite understand it.

That is pretty impressive. Where I come from music is on these vinyl discs. They're not easy to carry around at all.

Vinyl discs? I don't think I've run into those yet.

They're pretty cool. I think most people call the 'retro' now.

[peacockherald]

Retro? I do not think I have heard that term.

[whichwayyoulean]

It means old, but cool.

Oh. How... odd. Are there other retro things besides vinyl?

[whichwayyoulean]

I'm not sure, I'd have to ask the people of the future.

Ah, I see. I suppose it wouldn't be retro to me then - it's all so new.

I don't think that detracts from the coolness at all.

Haha, probably not, but then I will probably find everything 'cool' as you say.
