There's the distinct metallic hiss of scissors over the journal, late Sunday evening. Alex is sitting on a blanket out on the castle grounds, an earbud playing faintly-audible rock music in one ear, and a pair of scissors in her hand; she's cutting her hair, dark locks falling onto the grass as she chops it right up to her neck.]

You know, it's stupid how we freak out over how long we've all been here, and then forget the most stupidly obvious dates. Like birthdays.

[Snip. Snip.]

I guess I'm nineteen now, or something. Glad I forgot, or that whole dinosaur bullcrap would have been the worst birthday present ever. And that's counting the pirate thing a couple years back.

[She stops what she's doing to hold up her mirrors, trying to catch a look at the back of her hand. Anyone walking past who would like to offer an extra hand - or just a conversation - would be sneered at but much appreciated.]

[She pauses for a moment, not sure whether to make fun of him or humor him. She decides to start of her nineteenth year with a compromise between the two. Ahhh, maturity. Maybe.]

What, you somehow missed the whole tooth and claw parade? Or were you on the cruise ship?

What cruise ship? I showed up here a couple of days ago.

Oh my God, you're so lucky!

[Second person she's talked to who missed the whole dino thing, and she's getting jealous.]

A bunch of people got stuck on this cruise ship a couple of weeks ago, but the rest of us had to go get mauled by dinosaurs. It was really annoying.

Proper responsibilities? Ha, I don't think I've ever even remembered to take out the trash on my own.

[London just so happens to be out and about that evening (she figured it was about time Ivanna needed a walk) when she spots the young wizard.]

Why are you cutting your hair?! They have stylists for that, you know!

[London's dog stops at the edge of Alex's blanket, sniffing curiously.]

[Alex almost looks pleased to see London - it's been awhile, and she's missed her special brand of weirdness.]

What, like I'd want to pay for some bottle-blonde, gum-chewing chick to tell me I should take better care of my split-ends? Pass.

[London can't say she isn't pleased to see Alex as well. Who else was going to save her from this horrible hair decision?]

Honestly, would you really want someone chewing gum while they're messing with your hair? I mean, what if it falls out and gets stuck? Totally gross.

But you know, you really should take care of your split ends. I guess if you're going to do anything to your hair by yourself, cutting it is the best -and worst- thing you could possibly do.

Yeah, well, that's because I've been here. Haven't aged since I was seventeen.

[Rise needed to get out and get some fresh air, so she's just wandering around the castle grounds a bit. Until she catches sight of Alex and... wait, she's cutting her hair?! But... it's so pretty! Not that she wouldn't be cute with shorter hair, too, but...

... Well, she supposes it's not that big a deal, if Alex needs a change of pace. But she's kind of making a mess of it doing it all herself!

So she strolls on over and leans down closer to Alex's level, hands on her hips and looking as adorable as she possibly can.]

Needed a change?

[There's that trademark mischievous smirk, even as she gives Alex's hair an appraising look. She sees what she's going for, but it could definitely use a second set of hands to keep everything nice and even.]

[Alex turns over her shoulder at the voice, and looks up at Rise with a half-smile. She's happy to see her, even if she's not in the most stellar mood.]

Yeah. I had this haircut back during junior year. Feels nice when it's hot, I guess.

[She scoots over on the blanket to make room for her friend.]

[Oh... Rise can definitely tell there's something wrong. But she's glad Alex is happy enough to see her to at least attempt a smile!]

It's cute! Definitely suits you.

[At least, it is so far. When Alex scoots over, Rise sits and scoots in fairly close. She just hopes figures the invitation means Alex is perfectly okay sharing her personal space... and even reaches up a hand to brush through her hair. Where the scissors aren't anywhere near at the moment, of course.]

... It's got to be a pain using the mirror like that! Want some help?

[Rise's never tried cutting her own hair before, or anyone else's, really. But it has to be easier this way than Alex doing it completely by herself... and Rise can even it all out for her!]

[She picks the scissors up and passes them over to Rise, then motions at the already-trimmed ends in the front.]

I'm just trying to get it all up off my shoulders again. About even with these pieces, if you can do it.

[Sounds easy enough! And it's an excuse to be close to Alex...

Of course, she's very cautious to try and make up for the inexperience. So she mostly makes tiny, careful snips and runs her fingers through Alex's hair a lot, but it's gradually evening out nicely.]

You have really pretty hair...

[She'd noticed a long time ago, of course, but she probably never said anything... and it's hard to ignore up close like this.]

... I'm kinda jealous! Really!

[The teasing tone might sound insincere, but she kind of is! Alex doesn't strike her as the kind of girl who'd be quite as obsessive about taking care of her hair as Rise is, and it's still gorgeous! That's just not fair!]
