Hello, students. Welcome back to another year at Hogwarts. I am the Arithmancy professor, Hermione Granger. Will all of my OWL and NEWT students please turn in your summer homework as soon as possible? We'll be getting right to work in your next class so I want to be sure you're prepared.

Can you explain the wands, because I don't...really...get it....

I'm the wrong person to ask about wands. You're better off speaking with Ollivander. I can tell you that the wand chooses the wizard, so whichever wand you have is best suited for you.

Well, it's the being a wizard part that's kind of getting me right now.

Who's Ollivander?

Ollivander is a wandmaker. I don't know if he'd be in his shop, though. No one I recognize from home is here, so I don't know what year the castle is mimicking.

It might not be any year at all. Maybe just a generic thing.

So, can you give me any tips on how to handle this thing? Don't want to put somebody's eye out, now do I?

But the Whomping Willow is there, which does give a more definite year.

And you just hold it in your hand. Not too tightly or too loose.

Can you recommend some spells? I get the impression I'm expected to know a lot more than I do and I don't want to look silly for not even getting the basics.

Well, I think the best thing to do is just go over the books and try to learn what you can. Depending on your year, that'd be far too much for me to teach in one week.

Which books? There's a lot.

I'd start with Standard Book of Spells, which is divided by year.
