Hello, students. Welcome back to another year at Hogwarts. I am the Arithmancy professor, Hermione Granger. Will all of my OWL and NEWT students please turn in your summer homework as soon as possible? We'll be getting right to work in your next class so I want to be sure you're prepared.

Yeah. Back in my world it was mostly a cheap gimmick for tourists in some places. Tell them about their soul mates or whatever.

It's not much better here. Trelawney is very theatrical.

She and a centaur were sharing classes. But I don't think either of them will be here...

Yes. They have ways of predicting the future, too, though they are very mysterious about it and don't usually share what they know with humans. This centaur was helping as a favor to our headmaster.

Huh...how about that.

Then again, maybe it's good they don't usually share.

I'm honestly not sure people would listen, anyway. Some wizards view centaurs as lower-class.

Lemme guess, that sort of viewpoint isn't limited to just centaurs either huh.

No. They're the worst with house-elves! I've been campaigning for years for them to treat the house-elves with more respect, but so many just see them as servants. They don't even pay them!

No, they don't! And it gets even worse! If they're unable to obey their master's orders, the house-elves have to punish themselves through physical violence!

They have to punish themselves?! That's sick!

They have no rights at all, and all the wizards simply assume the house-elves are happy that way! But I knew a house-elf who was free, and he was much happier there than he was under his former master.

[not that Dobby is a great example of what should be standard for a house-elf]

Of course they assume they're happy this way, it's easier to let the status quo go on if you think everyone's okay with it.

I don't know how similar this is to half-elves in my world or the entire story, but it sure seems pretty rotten to me right now. Even servants deserve more rights than this.

It's nothing short of slavery! I've been working on helping the house-elves here at Hogwarts, but they're difficult to convince. With Dumbledore as a headmaster they are better off here than some other places, but they still deserve to be paid and offered vacations.

When something has been a certain way for so long, it can be hard to bring about change- even if it's in people's benefit.

Still, there's gotta be some way to do it, because you're right. It's slavery and not right.
