...from the make of this place, I'd say this is Elf sorcery...

[To appease his curiosity, Thorin opens the book and finds not only his name, but the words he spoke not seconds ago written inside.]

[He tilts a brow and observes his surroundings - seems to be a lobby of some sort. Dwarves don't typically live in castles, so he knows this is not the work of his kind - and his kind would never demand the sacrifice that this castle did.]

Not a "who" as far as we know. This magic is more powerful than anything any of us have known before. It can defy time and space, and even breaks laws of life and death. No individual has that kind of power.

...aye, I'm inclined to agree with you on that.

I assume then that you don't know the keeper of this place?

I don't. We've discovered a lot, but not that.

[Maddeningly unhelpful. Still, she seems to know more about this place than he does...which isn't saying much, but still.]

What do you call yourself, if you don't mind me asking?

I call myself a witch, and friend to elves.

[fuckelves]

[Thorin gives a slight grunt of discontent.]

I would find no problems befriending a witch.

An Elf-friend is an entirely different matter...

And why is that? All the elves I met here are kind and noble.

Elves abandoned me and my people when we needed their help. I watched hundreds of my kind die at the hands of a dragon because Elves refused to help.

My kin now suffer in exile because Elves would not help us the one time we asked it of them.

Forgive me if I haven't the highest opinions of them. A kind and noble Elf does not exist...

You can't generalize like that! It's just like me saying all wizards are bad simply because some are cruel to people like me. There are plenty of kind and noble elves out there.

The lady Galadriel, for example, or my friend Fenris. He's no longer here, but he was a very brave warrior.

[Thorin physically shudders at Galadriel's name.]

That particular Elf witch is certainly no friend of mine!

[It's not that he hates her on the same level as Thranduil, it's actually that tales of her power have rather scared him.]

I'm sorry to hear that. But just know that many people are friends of elves here, and you'll only make enemies if you keep slandering elf kind.

So be it then. Any fool who elects to make an enemy of me will face a Durin's wrath!

I would prefer not to make an enemy of anyone. We have enough going on without fighting amongst ourselves.

Oh? Are there other adversaries within the castle that require elimination?

Or do you mean to say that there are tasks and obstacles that the castle presents to its residents?

The latter. At least once a month we face unusual circumstances. When that happens, it's better to work as a team than to fight amongst ourselves.

[This is as close to him openly admitting that he will take up arms with Elves if he must as she's ever going to get.]

What sort of obstacles have you faced thus far, if you don't mind my asking?

Recently we had to rescue friends from a ship that tampered with their minds. And then we had to run from giant lizard creatures. Those are just examples. It's different every time.

[Giant lizard creatures? Dragons, perhaps? Thorin's going to assume that she means 'Dragons'.]

So you have indeed faced some incredible horrors.

That's only in the past few days. Some people have been here for years.

[He doesn't mean it as an insult. She referred to herself as a witch when he asked before, so he figured she didn't mind being called such.]

Aye, lass. The title of King Under the Mountain passed from my grandfather and onto me upon his passing into Mahal's Hall.
