What the...?

[Rodney frowned at the odd readings coming up on the tablet in his hand. Still walking like he knew where he was going, he continued to push at the screen and frown at the results.]

What is this?! What more could go wrong?! First the gate, then the crash now my tabl...

[Finally looking up he wasn’t following Sheppard into a room in Atlantis, but outside... On land... Nowhere near water.]

For the love of... [Annoyed, he tapped his ear bud.] Sheppard... Sheppard this is McKay, come in! [Silence.] Hello?! [He tapped his ear bud a few more times.]

This is so not happening right now!

I have lived off of rations and scavenged goods for almost twenty years. The newest clothes I own are twenty years old. Electricity and hot water are a goddamn luxury. It makes my year when I get my hands on a bottle of nice booze. Every day I'm thankful that I haven't died horribly or been executed.

Here, I don't even have to think about that shit. It's all just handed out on silver platters –– literally. And this morning, I ate a bagel with cream cheese and managed to get it all down without puking from how rich it was. That is what is great about being here.

But sure. Tell me about how magic isn't real.

Just because where you came from sucks compared to here doesn't mean that magic is real. The one doesn't explain or justify the other.

You know what? If this place is using technology to make anything I want miraculously appear in front of me, then I will happily call it technology. But for now, it's magic.

Sounds like beaming tech... Wait, did you say anything I want? Surely there must be limitations!?

I don't know. I've just been wishing for food and booze and creature comforts. Dream big, huh?

They tend to be the more important things. No good having a nuclear accelerator if you you're going to starve to death.

Right. I admit I don't know what a nuclear accelerator is.

It's a very powerful power source. Nice to have but not as nice as a hot meal... Unless of course there's impending doom then perhaps it might be the other way around, but as that doesn't seem to be the case here, a meal is likely to be better suited.

Nothing useful here to be powered that isn't already powered, that I know of.

It's not likely that we have one anyway. Although something that current appears useless might just require a little more juice to give it some purpose.

Still, it's good to know there is power here. That's a good start.

What powers the outlets in the castle, though?

[Tess thinks back to a time where electricity came from the walls plentifully and realizes she never learned how it got from one place to the other. She and Joel had a generator, once, but he had maintained it while they had it, and once it was gone, Tess had focused her mind on other things.

How did power ever get to the house from the plant, anyway?]

[Rodney pauses mid-step to think about that but only for a brief moment and he's moving again. From what he could see when he was outside there was no water nearby, no windmills, somehow a power plant didn't seem to fit the rest of the environment but possibly he supposed. A ZPM wasn't out of the question, now that held some possibilities...]

Excellent question! [Does he sound impressed?] Something I will investigate once I get my bearings.

Do you have any science or technical training?

[Her tone gets a bit tight.]

I know how to run a generator.

Oh?! [Sighs] Well, I suppose that's something. ... What are you good at?

Making connections. Moving product. Business.

And no, I don't have any training in anything beyond what was offered in high school.

[An amused noise. When people sound uncomfortable, she gets to feel in control.]

No, go ahead and say it. Never heard of a lawyer or doctor who dealt, huh?

Uh no-no, I'm sure they do to. But I uh, just put your description of your world together with your description of your uh... skills...

[Rodney has no idea what the woman he's talking to looks like, but suddenly he has a mental image of a female Ronin... He may not want to get on her bad side. Especially when neither Sheppard or Ronin appear to be handy to save his ass if need be.]

[An amused huff.]
