[This evening, Clem is outside, a small puppy on the end of a pink leash beside her. It currently seems to be happier rolling around in the grass rather than listening to the little girl trying to get it to do a trick.]

Sit. Siiiiiit. See, like this. [She tries to push the puppy's rump down, but it thinks it's playtime and rolls around some more. It gets Clem to laugh.]

No, no... [Sigh.] Okay, maybe we'll play for a little bit. It's time for a break, anyway.

I dunno. [Tess is a stranger. Maybe she's just mean!

[Maybe he tortures it out of her. Tess, you are talking to a kid.]

Nah, I'm just poking fun. As long as you don't let Copper do that again, I won't tell.

I won't. I'm getting better at telling when he needs to go, too. I've never had a dog before.

I had one as a kid. It's a big responsibility. But I'm sure Lee's told you all about that, huh?

Other people, too. I made sure to research before asking Lee if we could get one.

[Getting the puppy wasn't as fun as she imagined, but she's already in love with the dog.]

Smart kid.

I couldn't let him say no.

Are you friends?

[Who knows where that conversation went.]

Who? Me and Lee?

[She shrugs, but smiles.]

Yeah, I think we'll get along fine.

[Clem nods. Lee is easy to get along with.]

That's good. He needs more friends his age.

And who are his friends now?

Me, Ben, Molly, Carley... some other people too I think, but I don't know them.

[He should have more friends to talk to. She knows there's a lot she can't understand.]

I've met Ben, and he's mentioned the girls. Tell me about them, hmm?

[Clem will share names, but she's hesitant to say much more at the moment.]

Do you like Ben?

He seems like an okay kid. What do you think?

He's one of my best friends. [She's not oblivious to how others might see Ben, though. He's not as brave or as strong as Lee, but that's okay. He'll get there. She's not like Lee, either.]

[Nod.]It's good that you have people looking out for you.

Do you have people from home here?

I do. I have my partner Joel, and the kid he's looking after, Ellie. They're a bit like you and Lee, I guess.

Oh! I know Joel. And I talked to Ellie on the journals.

[She didn't know they knew each other. What a small world. Tess' words get Clem to tilt her head, however.]

Like me and Lee?

[What did that mean?]

[Tess pauses.]

He's not your father, but he looks after you. Something like that, right?
