[This evening, Clem is outside, a small puppy on the end of a pink leash beside her. It currently seems to be happier rolling around in the grass rather than listening to the little girl trying to get it to do a trick.]

Sit. Siiiiiit. See, like this. [She tries to push the puppy's rump down, but it thinks it's playtime and rolls around some more. It gets Clem to laugh.]

No, no... [Sigh.] Okay, maybe we'll play for a little bit. It's time for a break, anyway.

Eh, sort of. Mom came up with a bunch and I picked the one I liked.

[The smile fades a little as she remembers. That was something she agonized over, naming the dog. It feels like remembering someone else.]

Hey, hamsters are good, too.

[She gives Copper one last pat and then pushes herself back up to standing.]

They're a lot less work, that's for sure. And pretty cute on their own to boot.

[That gets a short laugh out of her.]

Smart hamster. Let's hope this one isn't quite on his level.

Don't worry, he'll learn that one real quick. Even dumb puppies know that hitting the floor first thing in the morning isn't fun.

Wouldn't be able to tell, looking at him now. He's tough. You look after him and he'll be alright.
