A Woman's Touch [ Dictated ]

[ There is a heavy sigh and a disgruntled snort that leak over the journals in the mid morning. If anyone knows Vanyel well, this usually announces the fact he is out with Yfandes, his horse-shaped Companion. And in fact, he is. He's holding up strips of ribbon to her so she can decide which she wants braided into her hair for the wedding, but so far no success. Not even tiny jewels like pearls or inexpensive crystals have piqued her interest.

So, finally, it has come to this. ]

If it is not to much trouble, I think I might need a lady's advice on this matter, or a gentleman's if he wishes to offer it. I seem to only be knowledgeable in the proper attire for men and have no sense of what a proper lady should be wearing to a wedding, according to my Companion.

So, ladies of Paradisa, your advice if you would be so kind?

Yfandes doesn't need ornaments, Van. (Tylendel strides into the stable, his hands in his pockets.) She's gorgeous as she is. Why not give her a good brush and then shine her hooves?

(He knows Yfandes is well-cared for, but a little ego-stroking won't hurt. He is fond of the Companion and he wants her to look however she wants.)

I know she looks wonderful all the time, but I thought she might like a little something for the wedding - few braids with ribbons perhaps.

It's up to her, Ashke. A lady knows what she wants. (He winks at Yfandes and strokes over her neck.) I know she'll outshine me, but you will too, so I'll deal with it.

A little something, yes. She is beautiful on her own, but I thought she would like something to wear to the ceremony.

Darling, I think you severely underestimate your ability to look ravishing in white.

True, but hopefully in at least one opinion there is something Yfandes will like. I was never really looking for just one answer.

Oh no, she is not the bride. She is my Companion. And she is already white. I thought she might like a bit of color.

Any color is pretty at a wedding, really, but usually I see ladies in light blues and pinks and sometimes red.

I do not think red is for her. To garish. Maybe pink, or she likes the blue of her saddle and bridle. Don't you?

Is your friend a horse? Does she talk like the one with the hat?

She is a Companion, not a horse, though she looks like one. And she does speak, but not as Cheese does. She uses MindSpeech, but I am the only one she can communicate with.

_{[ Which was not rare among Companions. They talked amongst themselves, but rarely with other Heralds or people unless in an extreme emergency. ]}

Hmm, perhaps. It is the season for them, and she would look lovely with them.

I don't think I understand what you mean. Either a horse can speak or it can't.

Ah, how to explain - she speaks mind-to-mind with myself. Another term for it I have learned is known as 'telepathy'. So she does not speak aloud, but with her mind.

And why doesn't she speak to anyone else? That seems very haughty of her, she's only a horse.

Not everyone has the Gift of MindSpeech and mind-to-mind speaking is very personal. You cannot lie. You cannot hide things. It is letting someone into a very deep part of yourself. We do it because we have a unique and special bond.

And please, she is not "only a horse". She is a Companion. They are special, gifts from the Goddess, aiding Heralds like myself in the protection of Valdemar, and as smart as you or I. She saved my life when I was Chosen, actually.
