[Kate had tried. She had really tried to totally ignore the egg. She had ignored it when she'd woken up to find it had appeared on Castle's bed stand. She ignored it when he started poking it excitedly. She ignored it when she came into the room and found it sitting nestled between her pillow and some blankets. She ignored it so much, and with so much of her heart and soul, she was almost sure at some point she would blink and it would simply vanish.

Instead, it hatched.]

Hey. Hey! No, off the bed! Off the bed! What, you want to chew up the other pillow too? How about my shoes? You want one of those, too!

[It takes a moment for Kate to realize her journal is open. Mainly because the small direwolf puppy that hatched is now chewing on the corner, droplets of drool hitting the paper and she swats him to get him away.]

Castle! I swear... [She is going to strangle him. But since her journal is already open, she might as well take some advantage of it.] Does anyone have any... I don't know, dog food?

[She's still wrapping her head around people having normal lives here. She's making a concerted effort to not make herself at home.]

Yeah. I got him as a Christmas gift from home.

Oh? From home? A, uh... [She gestured towards the ceiling.] Another weird castle thing?

Guess so. Maybe it wanted to remind me of bad memories or though I was lonely.

One sounds like a nicer motivation than the other.

Which one? Both sucks if you ask me.

Uh, not wanting you to be lonely. That seems... Nice.

Or pathetic. Depends on ho ya look at it. But I don't mind being alone. People are mostly annoying anyway.

[ She actually does get that, though. There's a reason she used to spend so much time by herself. ] I thought about getting a dog before but this wasn't quite the way I wanted to go about it.

Not everyone is bad. [Shrugs even though she can't see it.] It the people whom insist on putting their nose into my business or bothering me that is.

Uh huh. I had to fight hard to keep my dog back home. Mum wasn't too keen on the idea but Paddy helped me make sure I got to keep him. It was either that or Clyde would have gotten put down.

Well, I'll try not to get nosy.

[ No point anyway. It wasn't like she was a cop anymore. ] I'm glad you got your dog back, though. He sounds pretty important to you.

[Maybe it's for the best because Aaron harbours a lot of distrust for cops.]

Yeah he is. I enjoy taking care of him and playing with him. He loves to play fetch.

What's his name?

Clyde. He's a German Shepard. I got him cos his old owner was too old and fat to take him out walking.

[ Kate has to admit she is always impressed when she sees people find some kind of familiarity or happiness in this place, because she mostly hates it. ]

About a month. So I'm... Still getting used to it.

Yeah, it's a strange place. It takes some time to get used to it.

I'm not anywhere near getting used to it, actually. I can't even wrap my head around being here nine months.

Me neither. Once you think you know what's going on something new happens.

How've you managed it?

I just deal with it. I don't like what's happening but there's not much I can do about it.

Sounds about where I am. And I just keep hoping I'm going to wake up and realize this is some insane dream.
