[The journal falls open, and a faint burn marks show on the edges of the page. There are sounds - sounds like crashing and slamming, and yes. Cursing. A great deal of cursing that suddenly became words.]

Come - back ... down here you damned bird! No, stop! Stop! Not the curtains! Don't set fire to the curtains! Sit! Stay! ARGH!

[Then there is the sound where she turns and yells across the room.] ANNE! Get out here and help me! You have got to help me! This thing is setting fire to everything!

[There was another crash, and Katniss sighs as a few more burn spots appear on the page.]

...I hate this castle...

A bird on fire... [Interesting. Firethroat had heard mummers of fire birds before, but she had no seen one as far as she can remember. Perhaps they had gone somewhere other than Luster.]

Tell me, do you know if it was born on fire or caught aflame? [She doesn't want to make any assumptions.]

Oh, I was here for it. That bird set itself on fire as if it had some sort of internal 'let's set everything ablaze' switch.

[Still disgruntled? Just a little.]

[Definitely the firebird then.]

It would probably be wise to move it outside then, since it is unlikely to be able to put out the flame. [A young bird like that wouldn't know how even if it could.]

[Well, it certainly set things on fire.]

It won't go outside ... it's just sitting there. In the rafters. Squawking at me.

Have you tried using the [what was the word human's used again? oh yes.] window?

No, I tried using the door, because I thought it might have a good idea on how to get out by walking out - of course I used the window!

[Were it not for the circumstances, Firethroat might have roasted her for being disrespectful. However, having a baby thrust at you unawares would be enough to make anyone short-tempered, so she won't hold it against her.]

And how did it react?

[Well, Katniss is always short-tempered, but at least she knows when to hold her tongue better than when dealing with an actual dragon.]

It went into the rafters. I don't think it wants to leave us.

That would be understandable, if it has decided you are its parents.

Do you think it would go outside if you went there as well?

I ... haven't thought of that. Maybe? [She tilted her head at the bird.] Do you think it would want to follow us? We haven't exactly been doing much for it. Besides yelling at it.

That may be so, but you are still its guardians, even if temporarily. If the castle is influencing its thoughts to achieve this mentality, then it should follow you regardless. If this is its own choice, it still may follow even with the yelling. After all, who else does it have here?

...All right, you make a point. An annoying point, but still a really good point.

So long as it is a useful point, I believe the annoyance can be overlooked.
