[Bonnie has spent most of her morning in the castle kitchen baking cupcakes. It was a new hobby of hers and she was enjoying it a lot. She was currently waiting on her fifth batch to be cooked, the other batches all neatly set out and beautifully decorated. Before this, Bonnie would never have considered baking to be relaxing in the slightest and yet she felt at peace when she was in the kitchen.

There were around fifty cupcakes in total and the final batch would take it up to about sixty. Much too many for Bonnie to eat. After switching off the oven and taking out the last batch to cool, she cleaned her hands and opened her journal to announce:]

Free cupcakes! Come to the kitchen if you want one!

[She shakes her head] The Olympics? I... don't know what that is.

No. The Hunger Games happen every year.

Oh, okay. Basically, people from all over the world take part in different sporting activities to win medals: first place gets gold, second gets silver and third bronze.

Why is it called that?

[She looks down again, not meeting Bonnie's eyes as she speaks. She's seen the film enough times to know the story but it's still hard]

74 years ago there was an uprising, the 13 Districts against the Capitol. The Capitol won and one of the Districts was destroyed. Since then, every year the Capitol takes a boy and a girl between the ages of 12 and 18 from each District as Tributes in The Hunger Games. It's supposed to show us their forgiveness and be a reminder of what happened.

Everyone watches it all on TV. 24 kids all fighting in a big arena. The winner gets money and food and a big house and their District gets more food for the year. This year I was one of the Tributes from my District...

That isn't how you show forgiveness to anyone. That's cruel and brutal. Completely wrong. How anyone can even justify that is beyond me.

[She's disgusted by the very idea and rightly so. No one should have to go through something like that.]

You were picked? Oh, Rue.. [Her tone grows softer.] That's how you were hurt, right?

[She nods, eyes still downcast.]

I knew it was gonna happen. There's no way I could have won.

[She reaches over to place her hand on her arm, squeezing it gently.]

You didn't deserve it, Rue. No one does. I'm so sorry.

[She looks up, smiling a little.]

Thank you. But it's okay. I'm here, now, right? [Her words are strong, but her eyes show that she's trying to convince herself just as much as she is Bonnie.]

Yeah, you're here. [It isn't long until Bonnie is pulling her into a hug.] I won't let anything else happen to you, I promise.

[whoa hey hug. Wasn't expecting that. She hesitates for only half a second before hugging Bonnie back.]

Thank you. I'll be okay. There are other people from my world here, too.
