Second Drink

[Haymitch has finally decided that maybe, maybe, Peeta isn't crazy and they really are living in a magical castle with people from other worlds. Maybe. Of course, that doesn't mean he's not on his guard. Even if this is what people say, it doesn't mean Snow or any of his Capitol stooges couldn't show up and ruin everything. Given what Finnick told him about the future...well. Better to be safe than sorry.

And Haymitch was prepared to keep those kids safe rather than sorry at any cost.

And so, he's sitting in the Lux, occasionally glancing at the drink of whiskey he can't have until someone hands it to him, flicking through his journal pages. Eventually, he deigns to talk]

Okay. So let's say I'm more willing to buy this magical castle idea. I want to know more about it. What makes it tick. Some of you have been here for years, apparently, you must have learned something in all that time.

I'm sitting in the Lux, if you'd like to play sharetime. We can have a drink, learn a thing or two. It'll be fun.

[Oh, it's HER again]

You're going to tell me that you accepted everything in this world when you showed up?

[She loves him too. Not.]

Definitely not. I'm cool with magic and other worlds; I deal with them all the time. But being stuck in a sadistic castle that thinks it’s cute to mess with me on a monthly basis is not something I’m accepting anytime soon.

[Her voice sounds more and more cross as she goes.]

So you're not as open minded as you think, huh Kiddo?

[Dairine bristles at the nickname. Is this guy trying to irritate her?]

Got nothing to do with being open minded. It's called being smart. [Or stubborn. Choose your pick.]

Then why yell at me for not being open minded?

I wasn't yelling. [Her yell is far more shrill and annoying.]

You said you were more willing to believe in a magic castle. That sounds open minded to me.

So you have no point at all to your little rant? [Ugh, kids. Why are they in his life?]

My point was yes, I'm open minded, but that doesn't mean I've accepted my current situation!

[Powers, why is she talking to this man? This is testing her patience more than talking to Roshaun!]

Nevermind. You say you want information?

Right sure. Glad to hear that.

[It's what he does best]

That's what I said to the magic book, yes.

Good, cause there's some things I'd like to know too.

[Like how the hell did someone like him become a mentor, for example.]

[It's called being forced into it against your will]

Right. Shall I meet you down there, or would you prefer to stick with the journal?

[Dairine will figure that out soon enough.]

Whichever, I don't care. I'm not moving either way.

[Hmm... tough choice. Could she avoid strangling him long enough to have a decent conversation? (Or at the very least get the answers she needs?)

But talking to him in-person would be make it easier to check for tells. See if he's lying.

After some consideration, she sighs.]

Well, I guess I'll go easy on you, seeing as you seem to have some trouble with filters. [Can you sense her oh so innocent grin? Bet you can.] Be down in a bit.

[Oh, if only Haymitch had tells. He's the best liar out there, after all]

Yeah, well. Filters would work a lot better if people who should be able to see them did.

I'll wait with baited breath.

[Well, Dairine's faced off with the creator of lies Itself, so that’s debatable.]

Ah, filters can be tricky little things. Got to be careful with them. [She assumes he’s talking about Katniss missing the boat, because obviously he must have filtered to her, right??

Dairine takes the long way down (better known as actually walking instead of magically teleporting all over the place), so she can clear her head a bit. This talk will be useless if she completely loses her temper halfway through, and Dairine knows it.

So after a bit of a wait, the young teen walks into the Lux. She spots Haymitch fairly quickly and wanders over.]

Hey.

[Haymitch really does bring out the worst in people. He's just chilling on his bar stool, and gives her a cursory nod]

Hi again.

[With a nod back, Dairine slides onto a nearby stool and orders herself a soda (you know, one of those nonalcoholic drinks). Might as well; it’ll make her stand out a little less in the room full of adults.]

So, where should we begin?

[Kids and their sodas :/]

[What? It has caffeine and sugary goodness. :D]

But I suppose I can start. What do you know so far?

Oh yeah, I'm a hotbed of information.

I know we're in a magical castle, we have 'losses' and [dryly] wishes surely do come true.

When it comes to your world, yes.

Just the basics or did anyone explain the details of losses and wishing?

I figured out a lot by myself. The losses are something important to you. The wishing? Anything that can't hurt anyone, I gathered. Not that I'm planning on wishing for anything.

Yup, that’s losses to a T. Anything from an item, talent, or memories. Figure out why we lose them?

Actually, the restriction is only on weapons. Also there’s a size limit to wishes. I wouldn’t be able to wish myself up a jumbo jet, even if I wanted to. [Dairine raises an eyebrow at that last comment.] Be careful about your wording then. This place likes to take you literally sometimes. A lot of the time, in fact.

My guess is to keep us down as much as they can. Nothing like the threat of loosing even more to keep people in line.

Trust me, if there's one thing I'm good with, it's words.
