Um... I'm sorry I haven't really been around lately. I don't know if any of you know Peeta or heard him tell people what's happening but I didn't want you to worry.

[She takes a breath] In my world there's something called The Hunger Games. Every year two kids, a boy and a girl, are picked from each District to go to an arena and fight. [She pauses] There's only one winner... another girl from the Games I was in got here, Clove. She's what we call a Career. They train for years for the Games and volunteer to go.

I don't want her to know I'm here... at least, not yet. I've been staying with friends. I miss all of you, though. How have you been?

[Though she's not about to announce her presence she still misses talking to people. She hesitates a moment before picking up a pencil and writing a question]

No. At least, I hadn't heard it called that. I mean, we'd hide and try to find each other... when the Peacekeepers weren't looking... but we didn't have a name for it.

Peacekeepers? [Why do you keep asking, Galadriel, when you know you won't like the answer?]

Um... they're like guards. [Her voice gets softer] The Capitol sends them to make sure everyone in the District is obeying the rules.

They have guns... and they hurt people who break the rules or go against the Capitol.

I see. [She frowns, even though Rue can't see it.] I am sorry, child.

The Capitol is the only place in Panem that's really free, where people can do what they want.

[Well, what does one say to that? Even if she were the type to offer false reassurances, this girl has seen enough to see through them.]

There is little I may say to redress such a wrong, I know, and my words change nothing. But if it brings you comfort, I will say this: it need not be so always. Change comes to all kingdoms, whether we will it or no. I cannot say that you will see it, nor even that your children will. I know too little of your world to speculate on such things. Yet nothing built by the hands of man has true permanence.

Yeah. Peeta found me when I got here. Then there's Katniss, Finnick, Haymitch and Cinna. Oh, and I think there's someone named Gale here from Panem, too, but I don't know him.

[She pauses] And Clove...

I am glad. It may be easier to face this place with kith and kin.
