[She's up on the roof, speaking to her journal with several books around her, a notebook, and several components to something she's working on. Only she's struggling. There's something she's got to get off her chest.]

I've been doing a lot of thinking since I returned. I suppose it means something when you realize your parents were just as flawed as you. Even if they are now dead, and you'd wish to preserve their memory. They were loving and were good to us. I suppose I can't ask for anything else. We never wanted, and I know they loved each other.

I may never know why they did what they did, especially if I'm stuck here. But I suppose that isn't really the point. You live, you die, and hopefully you leave some imprint on someone. And in the meantime? You deal as best as you can, taking the consequences in stride. It makes me wonder about the nature of good and evil.

Everyone ends up doing terrible things, and as they say, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. All I can do is own up to mine.

[ Parts of this resonate with her. She's quiet as she turns the words over, focusing on them with the single-mindedness that is usually only present when she practices with her sword. Unwilling to share a conversation with everyone (why people don't take better care filtering when they can is something she will never understand), she bids the filter up then asks her question. There's no condemnation or guile in her voice, just curiosity. ]

What did they do?

They killed someone.

Oh. [ She thinks about what an appropriate answer to that might be. Her father had taken men's lives, but it never troubled her. He was a soldier and a lord. He had to make those decisions, take those actions. Finally, she settles for the first thing to come to mind. ] Mayhaps they had to. To protect their family.

I don't know. But then that isn't really the point. Regardless of what they've done, it's not about them. It's about me.

[ She can understand that. She nods mutely, regardless that the action cannot be seen. ]

Do you think this place is a second chance of sorts?

It could be. [She hums.]

It's sort of a vacation for me. I have to go back eventually. But for right now, this is better than home. Even with the curses.

[ That she can agree with wholeheartedly. She misses home, but she has no idea what awaits her when she returns. Here, she has her mother and brother. ]

I have to go home too. My family... [ She trails off. ] But this place is more peaceful. What's your name?

I can understand that. I have two siblings back home that need me.

I'm Violet Baudelaire.

I'm Arya.

[ She abstains from offering her family name. She knows she's safer here than in King's Landing, but she has issues trusting still. ]

It's nice to meet you.

Likewise. [ Ingrained manners she's struggled to erase take over momentarily. ] Have you been here long?

Almost a year.

That long? Do you know anyone here from before you arrived?

I am the only I know of from my home.

Is that common?

This is very mature of you, young lady. And I must say I've never found a proverb that holds water better.

[For all of her time here, talking animals was not something she'd come across.

I am sorry, mon amie! [He touches a wing to his chest.] I did not mean to eavesdrop, but I was nearby. Your wisdom beckoned me closer!

[Wing down, he pauses.]

I am sure your parents wanted only the best for you.

Are you really talking. To me? [She knows what he's saying is important, but this is still a big thing to get over.]

Oh. That's my mistake! I always forget where I am. Though there are so many humans ... You would think I'd be more worried about holding my tongue!

I'm talking, really. You are not befuddled - unless, of course, it is by looks.

[The dove takes a few steps closer] You are entrenched in books! Did you read some philosopher, to bring you to such introspection?

No. I just couldn't work on this until I got it off my chest.

It's much better to get rid of trouble weight, rather than carrying it in our souls for all eternity.

What are you making?

It's to computate for the millions of combinations in DNA analysis.

Whoa. [Yuuya sounds genuinely impressed. That certainly wasn't what he was expecting to hear.] That is a hefty order for one machine. You are interested in genetics?

Sort of. It's for a doctor in the clinic.

[Yuuya's experience with infirmaries has not been ... the best.]

How amazing! Some clinic. Sounds more like mad science in the works!

But then, my last experience was with a high school infirmary!

I think it's for diagnostics.

Ah.

[His expression (? he is a bird) doesn't change, but he lets out a breath.]

A relief! No one wants to be stuck alongside a mad doctor in a castle!

Diagnostics is a much more helpful and selfless pursuit.
